Monday 4/25/1986: Player of the Week honors go to Richard and Kittle
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Boston's pitcher J.R. Richard. Richard was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 2.12. Along the way he struck out 17 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. In 5 starts this year J.R. struck out 45 batters in 38.2 innings of work. His ERA is 1.86, his record 5-0. J.R. has pitched one shutout and one complete game. He's 6th in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! New York (N)'s shortstop Ron Kittle had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Ron went 10 for 18 (.556), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 15 RBI. This year Kittle drove in 21 and scored 15 runs while batting .318 with 7 homeruns. He's 10th in the National League in batting, 4th in homeruns and 2nd in RBI!
Saturday 4/23/1986: Teddy Higuera quiets Chicago (A) bats with shutout
TEXAS - Teddy Higuera had his best stuff going, and Chicago (A) hitters had nothing to cheer about. Texas' lefty pitched a 2-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. Higuera (1-3) struck out 2 and walked 3, throwing 61 of 100 pitches for strikes. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Paul Householder provided Texas with the offense Higuera needed as he went 3 for 4, hitting a homerun, scoring twice and collecting 3 RBI. Texas improved its record to 10-10, scoring 8 runs on 11 hits.
Friday 4/22/1986: Fred Lynn out for 6 weeks
BOSTON - Boston's centerfielder Fred Lynn hurt himself in the 6th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Fred Lynn will miss at least 6 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Lynn was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Dislocated Shoulder. Lynn has hit for a .277 average this season. He has 4 extra base hits along with 23 total bases, resulting in a .354 slugging percentage.
Thursday 4/21/1986: Baltimore's Hudson severely injured
BALTIMORE - When it rains, it pours. Baltimore's right-hander Charles Hudson will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Toronto where he left the field in the 7th inning. Ruptured Bicep Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Charles has a record of 1-1 this season, with an ERA of 4.36. In 33 Innings he was able to strike out 32 batters.
Thursday 4/21/1986: Detroit's Andre Dawson ropes five hits
DETROIT - Detroit's rightfielder Andre Dawson once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up California's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Thursday. His 2nd hit, a three-run homerun off Dave W. Johnson in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in left field. Number 3 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 461 feet, cleared the wall in left field. Number 4 in the 7th inning accounted for a double. He had singles in the 3rd inning and in the 8th inning (two RBIs). Andre did drive in 7 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He now has a total of 18 hits this season, accounting for a .254 batting average. Detroit improved its record to 9-10, scoring 25 runs on 24 hits.
Tuesday 4/19/1986: Robin Yount ropes 2000th career hit
CLEVELAND - Robin Yount got a standing ovation from 44173 fans in Cleveland, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. In 11 years of big league action so far, Robin has compiled a batting average of .305, along with 150 homeruns and 965 RBI. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.' With no outs in the 2nd inning, Robin drilled a three run homerun, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
