The best month of May in the American League certainly had Minnesota's right-hander Steve Rogers, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His ERA of just 0.56 helped him to a 3-0 record in May. He worked 32.1 innings, striking out 13 hitters while walking 13. Opposing players hit .140 against Steve this season. While posting an ERA of 1.73 he went 5-2 in 11 starts, fanning 27 and walking 33 hitters. Joe W. Price couldn't have pitched much better than he did in May, and the National League thought so as well, naming the lefty Pitcher of the Month. His ERA of just 0.97 helped him to a 4-1 record in May. He worked 37 innings, striking out 36 hitters while walking 5. Opposing players hit .163 against Joe W. this season. While posting an ERA of 1.64 he went 7-2 in 11 starts, fanning 66 and walking 18 hitters. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 3rd in wins!
Wednesday 6/1/1986: Atlanta's Roenicke named Batter of the Month
It's the 2nd time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Milwaukee's leftfielder Joe Charboneau. Charboneau helped his team with an average of .373 and 24 RBI in 110 at bats. Joe is hitting .357 this year, with 76 hits in 213 at bats. He has driven in 41 runs, slugging .549. He's 3rd in the American League in batting and 4th in RBI! The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Gary Roenicke, Atlanta's starting leftfielder. Gary went 41 for 107 (.383), while hitting 9 HR and collecting 19 RBI. He has hit 11 homeruns while batting .325 this season. His 63 hits and 20 walks add up to a .394 on-base percentage. He's 5th in the National League in batting!
Monday 5/30/1986: Pittsburgh's Ruhle out for 5-6 weeks
PITTSBURGH - When it rains, it pours. Pittsburgh's right-hander Vern Ruhle will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Philadelphia where he left the field in the 1st inning. Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 5.87 helped him to a 0-1 record this year. He struck out 6 and walked 3 in 15.1 innings.
Monday 5/30/1986: DeCinces and Davis win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Doug DeCinces, Boston's starting second baseman. DeCinces helped his team with an average of .455 and 10 RBI in 22 at bats. Alvin Davis from Chicago (N) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Alvin was on fire, hitting .550 with 1 HR and 4 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Saturday 5/28/1986: Cincinnati's Stoddard severely injured
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Bob Stoddard will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Chicago (N) on Saturday. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .239 against Bob this season. While posting an ERA of 5.72 he went 1-7 in 11 starts, fanning 50 and walking 12 hitters.
Saturday 5/28/1986: Boston's Bobby Grich laces 2000th career hit
DETROIT - Boston's Bobby Grich showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Detroit on Saturday. His hit in the 7th inning was a single off David Palmer. In 15 years of big league action so far, Bobby has compiled a batting average of .261, along with 338 homeruns and 1347 RBI. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.'
Friday 5/27/1986: Atlanta's Richards severely injured
ATLANTA - Atlanta's rightfielder Gene Richards will miss at least 4 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Richards was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Inflamed Anterior Cruciate Ligament. While compiling an on base percentage of .291, Gene hit .239 and slugged .362. He has collected 13 runs batted in this year.
Thursday 5/26/1986: Chicago (N)'s Leon Durham ropes five hits
ST. LOUIS - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Chicago (N)'s rightfielder Leon Durham after the 12-6 win over St. Louis. A double off Ray Bare in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. A two-run double off Ray Bare in the 2nd inning accounted for his 2nd hit. A pitch from Ray Bare in the 4th inning left his bat for a RBI double. In the 8th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Bryn Smith. He had a single Leon did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He is hitting .251 this season, with 4 HR and 12 RBI.
Wednesday 5/25/1986: Cesar Cedeno (STL) will miss 7 weeks
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' Cesar Cedeno suffered a serious injury Wednesday in a game against Chicago (N). Cedeno fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 7 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Groin Muscle which will require surgery. This year Cedeno drove in 11 and scored 14 runs while batting .293 with one homerun.
