While posting an ERA of 1.73 he went 5-2 in 11 starts, fanning 27 and walking 33 hitters. Joe W. PITTSBURGH - When it rains, it pours. Pittsburgh's right-hander Vern Ruhle will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Philadelphia where he left the field in the 1st inning. Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 5.87 helped him to a 0-1 record this year. He struck out 6 and walked 3 in 15.1 innings.
Monday 5/30/1986: DeCinces and Davis win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Doug DeCinces, Boston's starting second baseman. DeCinces helped his team with an average of .455 and 10 RBI in 22 at bats. DETROIT - Boston's Bobby Grich showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Detroit on Saturday. His hit in the 7th inning was a single off David Palmer. In 15 years of big league action so far, Bobby has compiled a batting average of .261, along with 338 homeruns and 1347 RBI. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.'

ATLANTA - Atlanta's rightfielder Gene Richards will miss at least 4 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Richards was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Inflamed Anterior Cruciate Ligament. While compiling an on base percentage of .291, Gene hit .239 and slugged .362. He has collected 13 runs batted in this year.

ST. LOUIS - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Chicago (N)'s rightfielder Leon Durham after the 12-6 win over St. Louis. A double off Ray Bare in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. A two-run double off Ray Bare in the 2nd inning accounted for his 2nd hit. A pitch from Ray Bare in the 4th inning left his bat for a RBI double. In the 8th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Bryn Smith. Wednesday 5/25/1986: Cesar Cedeno (STL) will miss 7 weeks
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' Cesar Cedeno suffered a serious injury Wednesday in a game against Chicago (N). Cedeno fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 7 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Groin Muscle which will require surgery. This year Cedeno drove in 11 and scored 14 runs while batting .293 with one homerun.
