Friday 7/1/1986: Milwaukee's Eichelberger earns Pitcher of the Month award
Juan Eichelberger couldn't have pitched much better than he did in June, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He went 5-0 in June and finished the month with an ERA of 1.50. He struck out 19 in 36 innings. In 17 starts this year Juan struck out 52 batters in 122.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.50, his record 14-1. Juan has pitched one shutout and one complete game. He's 4th in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! It's the 2nd time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to New York (N)'s pitcher Scott Sanderson. He struck out 36 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 3-0 while pitching 36 innings. His ERA in June was 0.73. Scott has a record of 10-1 this season, with an ERA of 2.05. In 118.2 Innings he was able to strike out 116 batters. He's 5th in the National League in ERA and 6th in wins!
Friday 7/1/1986: Boston's Rice earns Batter of the Month award
The American League's best player of the month was Boston's Jim Rice, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Jim was on fire, hitting .315 with 10 homeruns and 23 RBI. Jim is hitting .290 this year, with 96 hits in 331 at bats. He has driven in 48 runs, slugging .523. The National League's best player of the month was Atlanta's Mark Brouhard, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Brouhard helped his team with an average of .366 and 21 RBI in 101 at bats. Mark is hitting .279 this year, with 82 hits in 294 at bats. He has driven in 48 runs, slugging .507.
Monday 6/27/1986: New York (A)'s Garrelts wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Scott Garrelts, one of New York (A)'s best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.64 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Rick Down from Los Angeles (N) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He hit .478 with 7 RBI and slugged .913 in 23 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 9 game hitting streak right now.
Friday 6/24/1986: Frank DiPino out for 6 weeks
TORONTO - Toronto's pitcher Frank DiPino was part of a scary incident that saw the left-hander being hit by a line drive in the 5th inning of the game between Toronto and Kansas City. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. DiPino will miss about 6 weeks. Toronto wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that DiPino had suffered a Broken Cheekbone. Opposing players hit .247 against Frank this season. While posting an ERA of 2.90 he went 5-4 in 0 starts, fanning 29 and walking 16 hitters.
Thursday 6/23/1986: Los Angeles (N)'s Willie Aikens pounds five hits
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s first baseman Willie Aikens once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Cincinnati's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Thursday. Number 1 in the 1st inning accounted for a double. In the 4th inning he belted a double off Gene Nelson. A double off Mark Littell in the 5th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. Number 4 in the 5th inning, a shot estimated at 446 feet, cleared the wall in center field. He had a single in the 7th, driving in one run. Willie did drive in 5 while scoring 2 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 83 hits in 273 at bats, resulting in a .304 batting average. Los Angeles (N) scored 19 runs on 21 hits.
