Tuesday 7/19/1986: Larry Christenson blanks Philadelphia with a 2-hitter
PHILADELPHIA - It was a great day for Montreal's right-hander Larry Christenson. The 32-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Philadelphia on Tuesday. Christenson (13-7) struck out 6 and walked 1, throwing 60 of 95 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Montreal's rightfielder Lee Mazzilli finished 2 for 4, hitting a homerun, scoring 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Christenson. Montreal improved its record to 58-37, scoring 5 runs on 7 hits.
Monday 7/18/1986: Huge blow for Los Angeles (N)'s Sosa, career over
LOS ANGELES (N) - It was one of baseball saddest days. Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Jose Sosa fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against San Francisco on Monday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Pat Sheridan, then suddenly collapsed. After being taken to a local hospital, Sosa was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Ligament Elbow. This season Sosa compiled an ERA of 4.08, going 4-8 in 16 starts. He fanned 76 while giving up 118 hits in 103.2 innings. His career featured a record of 46-50 with an ERA of 3.71. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
Monday 7/18/1986: McCatty and Valenzuela win Player of the Week award
Steve McCatty of Boston wins his 4th Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. McCatty was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.59. Along the way he struck out 4 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Fernando Valenzuela, one of St. Louis' best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.
Tuesday 7/12/1986: New York (N)'s Ken Phelps has great day with five hits
SAN FRANCISCO - New York (N)'s first baseman Ken Phelps once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up San Francisco's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Tuesday. A 449 foot drive to center field marked his 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Kelly Downs in the 2nd inning. A pitch from Kelly Downs in the 3rd inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 387 feet from home plate in left field. His 5th hit was a double off Dan Larson in the 8th inning. He collected singles in the 5th inning and in the 7th . Ken scored 3 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He now has a total of 60 hits this season, accounting for a .205 batting average. New York (N) scored 12 runs on 17 hits.

MILWAUKEE - Steve Shields took the mound and never left. And Baltimore hitters couldn't touch him at all. Milwaukee's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 3 career shutouts in 142 games started. Shields (10-5) fanned 6 and walked 1, throwing 94 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' The hitting star for Milwaukee was first baseman Keith Hernandez, he finished 4 for 4, hitting a double, scoring 2 runs. The final score of the game was 6-0.
