Tuesday 7/26/1986: Sid Fernandez pitches his 1st shutout of the season
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s left-hander Sid Fernandez will never forget this day. The 23-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against San Diego on Tuesday. Fernandez (15-5) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking 1, throwing 96 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' The hitting star for Los Angeles (N) was third baseman Otto Velez, he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, hitting two dingers, scoring twice and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Monday 7/25/1986: Rick Sutcliffe (MON) will miss full season
MONTREAL - Montreal's right-hander Rick Sutcliffe will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against New York (N) on Monday. Montreal wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Sutcliffe had suffered a Torn Tricep Muscle. In 25 starts this year Rick struck out 136 batters in 148.1 innings of work. His ERA is 4.49, his record 12-6. He's 7th in the National League in wins!
Monday 7/25/1986: Walling (CLE) and Gullett (NYM) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Denny Walling, Cleveland's starting centerfielder. He hit .560 with 7 RBI and slugged .800 in 25 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. Walling has hit 17 taters this year while batting .319. He adds 13 doubles, along with 64 runs scored. He's 8th in the American League in batting and 4th in RBI! It's the 7th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to New York (N)'s pitcher Don Gullett. Gullett was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 4 in 17.1 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 2.17 helped him to a 10-6 record this year. He struck out 56 and walked 28 in 153.2 innings. Don has pitched 3 shutouts and 3 complete games.
