Breaking News
Friday 7/29/1986: Mickey Tettleton (BOS) will miss full season
BOSTON - Boston's catcher Mickey Tettleton will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Boston and California. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Tettleton collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Calf Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Tettleton has hit for a .260 average this season. He has 27 extra base hits along with 151 total bases, resulting in a .452 slugging percentage.
Wednesday 7/27/1986: Bob Walk out for 6 weeks
MONTREAL - Montreal is without its right-hander Bob Walk for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Mookie Wilson in a game against New York (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Montreal wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Walk had suffered a Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. This season Walk compiled an ERA of 2.28, going 13-5 in 26 starts. He fanned 150 while giving up 137 hits in 174 innings. Bob has pitched 2 shutouts and 3 complete games. He's 10th in the National League in ERA and 2nd in wins!
Wednesday 7/27/1986: Milt Thompson hits for the cycle against Chicago (A)
BALTIMORE - Milt Thompson led Baltimore to a 15-4 win over Chicago (A) by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! Number 1 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 338 feet, cleared the wall in right field. The game was tied, 2-2, after the blast. A pitch from Tony Ghelfi in the 5th inning left his bat for a RBI double. That one tied it at 3 runs apiece. A single in the 6th off Chip Lang accounted for his 3rd hit. A pitch from John Littlefield in the 8th inning left his bat for a triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Milt did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He is hitting .272 this season, with 7 HR and 35 RBI. 68 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Milt. On 6/4/1986, Rick Burleson was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Wednesday 7/27/1986: Steve Rogers (MIN) will miss 6-7 weeks
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's pitcher Steve Rogers was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 4th inning of the game between Minnesota and Boston. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Rogers will miss about 6-7 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Cheekbone which will require surgery. Steve has a record of 8-5 this season, with an ERA of 2.59. In 132 Innings he was able to strike out 59 batters.
