Breaking News
Monday 8/15/1986: Frank Tanana blanks Kansas City with a 2-hitter
SEATTLE - Frank Tanana had some fun again. Kansas City hitters did not. Seattle's lefty gave up just 2 hits in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 25 career shutouts in 399 games started. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Tanana (16-5) struck out 6 and walked 2, throwing 74 of 129 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Seattle was first baseman Hiromitsu Ochiai, he finished with 1 hit in 4 AB. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Monday 8/15/1986: Player of the Week honors go to Ochiai and Winfield
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Hiromitsu Ochiai, Seattle's starting first baseman. He hit .560 with 16 RBI and slugged 1.320 in 25 at bats. Hiromitsu has gone 103 for 376 (.274) this season, hitting 26 bombs and driving in 81 runs. He has scored 62 runs on his own. He's 6th in the American League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! Pittsburgh's rightfielder Dave Winfield had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Dave pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .583 with 6 HR and 14 RBI while slugging 1.333.
Friday 8/12/1986: Minnesota has no chance in a 2-hitter by Jim Beattie
SEATTLE - Great days are rare. But not for Seattle's right-hander Jim Beattie. Minnesota found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 7th time he has done it in his career. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Beattie (13-6) struck out 8 and issued 2 BB, throwing 77 of 116 pitches for strikes. Hiromitsu Ochiai helped Beattie at the plate, he got 3 hits in 5 AB, hitting two dingers, stroking a double, scoring three runs and collecting 6 RBI. Seattle scored 18 runs on 22 hits.
Thursday 8/11/1986: Dave Winfield pounds three dingers
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati 12-0, but that was not the real story of the game. Dave Winfield was, as he went deep three times. His 1st blast, a two-run homerun off Jimmy Key in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 429 feet from home plate. His 2nd shot, off Jimmy Key in the 2nd inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. Number 3 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 413 feet, cleared the wall in right field. Dave went 4 for 5, scoring three times with 9 RBI.
Thursday 8/11/1986: Dennis Lewallyn quiets Cincinnati bats with shutout
PITTSBURGH - Dennis Lewallyn took the mound and never left. And Cincinnati hitters couldn't touch him at all. Pittsburgh's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 10 career shutouts in 214 games started. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Lewallyn (11-5) struck out 5 and walked none, throwing 60 of 98 pitches for strikes. Dave Winfield provided Pittsburgh with the offense Lewallyn needed as he collected 4 hits in 5 trips to the plate, hitting THREE homeruns, with three runs scored and driving in 9 runs. The final score of the game was 12-0.
Thursday 8/11/1986: Minnesota's Stanhouse severely injured
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's right-hander Don Stanhouse will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Seattle on Thursday. Stanhouse was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Ligament Elbow. His ERA of 3.45 helped him to a 9-6 record this year. He struck out 142 and walked 43 in 156.1 innings.
Tuesday 8/9/1986: Huge blow for Cincinnati's Bostock, career over
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's leftfielder Lyman Bostock will miss at least entire career after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Torn Calf Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. While compiling an on base percentage of .293, Lyman hit .252 and slugged .388. He has collected 32 runs batted in this year.
Tuesday 8/9/1986: Hiromitsu Ochiai uncorks five hits against Detroit
DETROIT - 'You know, in batting practice I didn't really feel that comfortable about my stroke today, but baseball is more than hitting. Then, when you're not trying to force a hit, you slug them in droves,' says Hiromitsu Ochiai after his 5 hit game, which Seattle won 16-1 against Detroit. His 2nd hit, off David Palmer in the 3rd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. A 334 foot drive to right field marked his 5th hit, a two-run homerun off John Cerutti in the 7th inning. He collected singles in the 1st , in the 4th inning and in the 5th inning . Hiromitsu did drive in 3 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He is hitting .266 this season, with 23 HR and 71 RBI.
Monday 8/8/1986: Mitch Webster (MON) will miss full season
MONTREAL - Montreal's centerfielder Mitch Webster will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Montreal and Houston. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Webster collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Knee. He has hit 12 longballs while batting .273 this season. His 106 hits and 35 walks add up to a .337 on-base percentage.
