Thursday 9/1/1986: Montreal's Hagen named Pitcher of the Month
New York (A)'s David Clyde had a terrific August, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He struck out 50 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 6-0 while pitching 50 innings. His ERA in August was 0.51. David fired THREE shutouts! This season Clyde compiled an ERA of 2.35, going 19-5 in 27 starts. He fanned 171 while giving up 172 hits in 210.2 innings. David has pitched 4 shutouts and 12 complete games. He's 5th in the American League in ERA and 3rd in wins! Kevin Hagen pitched like a legend in August, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. The American League Batter of the Month award goes to Hiromitsu Ochiai, Seattle's starting first baseman. Ochiai helped his team with an average of .352 and 33 RBI in 108 at bats. Hiromitsu has gone 120 for 440 (.273) this season, hitting 30 bombs and driving in 94 runs. He has scored 74 runs on his own. He's 6th in the American League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! Tim Raines Sr. of St. Louis wins his 2nd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. He had an on base percentage of .333 and hit .284, while driving in 30 runs. While compiling an on base percentage of .334, Tim hit .285 and slugged .644. He has collected 96 runs batted in this year. He's 2nd in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Wednesday 8/31/1986: Montreal's Jim Dwyer hits for the cycle
SAN DIEGO - Jim Dwyer is a pretty good hitter, but his 6 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A single in the 2nd off Mike Couchee accounted for his 1st hit. In the 3rd inning he belted a two-run double off Buddy Bailey. A pitch from Buddy Bailey in the 4th inning left his bat for a RBI triple. His 4th hit, a solo homerun off Buddy Bailey in the 6th inning, cleared the fence in right-center. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! A single in the 8th off Santo Alcala accounted for his 5th hit. A single in the 9th off Santo Alcala accounted for his 6th hit. Jim scored 3 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! He now has a total of 139 hits this season, accounting for a .299 batting average. 69 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Jim. On 7/27/1986, Milt Thompson was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Tuesday 8/30/1986: Scott Sanderson pitches 2-hit shutout against Los Angeles (N)
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s right-hander Scott Sanderson is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Los Angeles (N) on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 12th time he has done it in his career. Sanderson (16-5) struck out 4 and issued 2 BB, throwing 59 of 103 pitches for strikes. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Mookie Wilson helped Sanderson at the plate, he went 3 for 5, hitting 2 doubles, scoring 2 runs with 2 RBI. New York (N) improved its record to 69-62, scoring 5 runs on 10 hits.

NEW YORK (A) - David Clyde took the mound and never left. And California hitters couldn't touch him at all. New York (A)'s southpaw gave up just 2 hits in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 25 career shutouts in 292 games started. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Clyde (19-5) struck out an astounding 15 and walked none, throwing 72 of 112 pitches for strikes. Howard Johnson helped Clyde at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, and driving in 2 runs. New York (A) scored 6 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 8/29/1986: Galarraga (BOS) and Puckett (PIT) win P.O.W. award
Andres Galarraga from Boston wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Andres was on fire, hitting .417 with 4 HR and 8 RBI. SAN DIEGO - Danny Darwin took the mound and never left. And San Diego hitters couldn't touch him at all. Montreal's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 8 career shutouts in 170 games started. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Darwin (9-13) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 95 pitches. The hitting star for Montreal was first baseman Eddie Murray, he got 2 hits in 4 AB. Montreal improved its record to 75-54, scoring 3 runs on 9 hits.
Sunday 8/28/1986: Boston's Boggs severely injured
BOSTON - Boston's Wade Boggs suffered a serious injury Sunday in a game against Texas. Boggs fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 7 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Inflamed Posterior Cruciate Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. This year Boggs drove in 79 and scored 94 runs while batting .333 with 8 taters. He's 3rd in the American League in batting!
Sunday 8/28/1986: Larry Walker (TEX) will miss 4 weeks
TEXAS - Texas' rightfielder Larry Walker suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Boston's Tom Hall. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Walker will probaby miss 4 weeks. Texas wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Walker had suffered a Broken Hand. This year Walker drove in 41 and scored 43 runs while batting .249 with 6 taters.
Friday 8/26/1986: Dan Petry dominates San Francisco, gives up just one hit
SAN FRANCISCO - Pittsburgh's right-hander Dan Petry is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Francisco on just one hit. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 11th time he has done it in his career. Petry (14-3) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 7. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Pittsburgh's third baseman Glenn Hubbard collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, stroking a double, scoring two runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Petry. Pittsburgh scored 4 runs on 7 hits.
