Tuesday 9/6/1986: Montreal's Armstrong out for 7 weeks
MONTREAL - When it rains, it pours. Montreal's right-hander Mike Armstrong will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Pittsburgh where he left the field in the 8th inning. Armstrong was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. In 0 starts this year Mike struck out 40 batters in 52.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.27, his record 9-5.
Tuesday 9/6/1986: Oakland's Pettis severely injured
OAKLAND - Oakland's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, leftfielder Gary Pettis, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 4-5 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Thigh Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. This year Pettis drove in 59 and scored 72 runs while batting .269 with 11 longballs.
Monday 9/5/1986: Leonard and Dwyer win Player of the Week award
Cleveland's leftfielder Jeffrey Leonard had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Jeffrey went 12 for 25 (.480), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 9 RBI. Leonard has hit for a .284 average this season. He has 62 extra base hits along with 258 total bases, resulting in a .495 slugging percentage. It's the 10th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Montreal's leftfielder Jim Dwyer. Dwyer helped his team with an average of .556 and 13 RBI in 27 at bats. Dwyer has walked 61 times this year and posts a .377 OBP. While batting .303, 144 for 476, he has driven in 76 runs. He's 7th in the National League in batting!
