Monday 9/12/1986: Fidrych and Kingery win Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Cleveland's Mark Fidrych this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Fidrych was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 2.12. Along the way he struck out 19 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 2.91 helped him to a 15-10 record this year. He struck out 196 and walked 39 in 222.2 innings. He has 11 complete games and 2 shutouts. Mike Kingery from Chicago (N) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Mike went 9 for 16 (.563), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 5 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. Kingery has hit for a .259 average this season. He has 49 extra base hits along with 208 total bases, resulting in a .456 slugging percentage.
Saturday 9/10/1986: Danny Jackson pitches 2-hit shutout against Oakland
OAKLAND - Cleveland's left-hander Danny Jackson is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Oakland on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 2nd time he has done it in his career. Jackson (12-6) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 120 pitches. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' The hitting star for Cleveland was shortstop Cal Ripken, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, homering once, scoring twice. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Friday 9/9/1986: Montreal's Mazzilli out for 7-8 weeks
MONTREAL - Montreal's rightfielder Lee Mazzilli hurt himself in the 6th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Lee Mazzilli will miss at least 7-8 weeks. Dislocated Shoulder was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Lee has gone 132 for 485 (.272) this season, hitting 12 taters and driving in 58 runs. He has scored 79 runs on his own.
