Wednesday 9/21/1986: Doug Heinold quiets Texas bats with shutout
TEXAS - It was a great day for Oakland's right-hander Doug Heinold. The 31-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Texas on Wednesday. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Heinold (2-1) struck out 4 and walked none, throwing 57 of 84 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Oakland was shortstop Rick Burleson, he got 1 hit in 3 AB. Oakland scored 3 runs on 5 hits.
Monday 9/19/1986: Parrish and Valentine win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Lance Parrish, Oakland's starting catcher. Lance was on fire, hitting .522 with 3 HR and 10 RBI. Montreal's leftfielder Ellis Valentine had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .536 and hit .556, while driving in 5 runs.
Sunday 9/18/1986: Greg Walker punishes Detroit with four hits, cycle
DETROIT - Greg Walker is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a triple off Ron Robinson. A single in the 3rd off Ron Robinson accounted for his 2nd hit. A pitch from Steve Shirley in the 4th inning left his bat for a two-run double. His 4th hit, a two-run homerun off Bob Kipper in the 7th inning, landed an estimated 334 feet from home plate. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Greg did drive in 5 while scoring 4 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 106 hits in 341 at bats, resulting in a .311 batting average. He becomes the 70th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 8/31/1986, Jim Dwyer was the last player to hit for the cycle.
