Saturday 10/1/1986: Soto and Gullett receive Pitcher of the Month award
Cleveland's Mario Soto had a terrific September, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He struck out 24 hitters in his 4 starts, putting together a record of 2-0 while pitching 24 innings. His ERA in September was 0.68. Mario has a record of 18-8 this season, with an ERA of 2.05. In 241 Innings he was able to strike out 222 batters. Mario has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 8th in wins! Don Gullett couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the National League thought so as well, naming the lefty Pitcher of the Month. He struck out 15 hitters in his 7 starts, putting together a record of 6-0 while pitching 15 innings. His ERA in September was 1.07. Don pitched a shutout as well. His ERA of 1.82 helped him to a 21-7 record this year. He struck out 93 and walked 57 in 262 innings. He has 5 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 2nd in the National League in ERA and 2nd in wins!
Saturday 10/1/1986: Batter of the Month award winners announced
The American League's best player of the month was Cleveland's Jeffrey Leonard, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. In 111 at bats he hit .369 with 8 HR and 27 RBI. Leonard has hit 27 longballs this year while batting .293. He adds 42 doubles, along with 94 runs scored. The National League's best player of the month was New York (N)'s Floyd Rayford, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He hit .347 with 23 RBI and slugged .768 in 95 at bats. Floyd has gone 135 for 559 (.242) this season, hitting 36 bombs and driving in 90 runs. He has scored 70 runs on his own.
Monday 9/26/1986: Don Robinson turns in great performance against Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - Atlanta's right-hander Don Robinson is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Pittsburgh found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Robinson 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 10th shutouts in his career. Kirby Puckett spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with no outs in the 7th inning. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Robinson (17-5) struck out 5 and issued 1 BB, throwing 56 of 92 pitches for strikes. Dale Murphy provided Atlanta with the offense Robinson needed as he stroked 1 hit in 3 AB, blasting a homerun. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Monday 9/26/1986: Pittsburgh's Petry wins Player of the Week award
It's the 11th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Kansas City's third baseman George Brett. George pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .500 with 1 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .964. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 15 games. Dan Petry of Pittsburgh wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. Dan went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.55, while fanning 12 in 16.1 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
