Mike Easler from Seattle wins his 7th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Mike went 15 for 24 (.625), while hitting 0 HR and collecting 9 RBI. Easler has hit 6 taters this year while batting .369. He adds 16 doubles, along with 44 runs scored. He's 2nd in the American League in batting and 5th in RBI! New York (N)'s catcher Ozzie Virgil Jr. had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Ozzie pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .600 with 2 HR and 2 RBI while slugging .840. Virgil Jr. has hit 12 taters this year while batting .297. He adds 2 doubles, along with 25 runs scored. He's 10th in the National League in batting!
Friday 5/20/1987: Milwaukee's Winters severely injured
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's catcher Matt Winters will miss at least 7 weeks after he got hurt seriously in a collision at home plate. He laid on the ground without movement for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Hand which will require surgery. While compiling an on base percentage of .376, Matt hit .305 and slugged .468. He has collected 17 runs batted in this year.
Monday 5/16/1987: Player of the Week honors go to Walling and Dawson
Cleveland's centerfielder Denny Walling had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Walling helped his team with an average of .533 and 4 RBI in 30 at bats. Denny has gone 59 for 164 (.360) this season, hitting 6 homeruns and driving in 25 runs. He has scored 26 runs on his own. He's 4th in the American League in batting! Andre Dawson wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 30 at bats he hit .400 with 2 HR and 10 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
Saturday 5/14/1987: Juan Eichelberger dominates Minnesota, gives up just 2 hits
MILWAUKEE - Juan Eichelberger had some fun again. Minnesota hitters did not. Milwaukee's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 8 career shutouts in 234 games started. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Eichelberger (6-2) fanned 9 and walked 1, throwing 102 pitches. Joe Charboneau helped Eichelberger at the plate, he went 1 for 4, homering once, with 3 RBI. Milwaukee improved its record to 22-17, scoring 8 runs on 11 hits.
Tuesday 5/10/1987: Billy Taylor (LAN) will miss 6 weeks
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N) is without its right-hander Billy Taylor for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Alan Wiggins in a game against Atlanta. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Los Angeles (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Taylor had suffered a Ruptured Elbow Ligament. His ERA of 3.44 helped him to a 2-0 record this year. He struck out 39 and walked 15 in 36.2 innings.
