Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Texas' Walt Terrell. He started 6 games in June, going 5-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.74 in 48.1 innings. Walt fanned 34 hitters. Walt also fired a shutout. Walt has a record of 11-1 this season, with an ERA of 1.19. In 136 Innings he was able to strike out 100 batters. Walt has pitched 2 shutouts and 5 complete games. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is Atlanta's Don Robinson. Joe Charboneau of Milwaukee wins his 4th Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the American League. Joe went 34 for 96 (.354), while hitting 9 HR and collecting 27 RBI. His season features a batting average of .294 (92 hits in 313 AB), 10 doubles, 3 triples and 18 longballs. Charboneau collected 69 RBI and 51 runs as well. He's 3rd in the American League in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns! It's the 1st time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to San Francisco's rightfielder Pete M. O'Brien. O'Brien helped his team with an average of .383 and 22 RBI in 94 at bats. Pete M. is hitting .341 this year, with 100 hits in 293 at bats. He has driven in 53 runs, slugging .611. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 5th in homeruns and 7th in RBI!
Monday 6/27/1987: Cleveland's Thomas wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Gorman Thomas, Cleveland's starting designated hitter. Gorman pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .577 with 1 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .808. Gorman has gone 102 for 287 (.355) this season, hitting 9 bombs and driving in 50 runs. He has scored 44 runs on his own. He's 2nd in the American League in batting! Willie McGee wins his 1st Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Willie went 9 for 20 (.450), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 9 RBI.
Friday 6/24/1987: Dave Stewart blanks Minnesota with a 2-hitter
MINNESOTA - Toronto's right-hander Dave Stewart is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Minnesota on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 15th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Jay Schlueter singled with one out in the 7th inning. Stewart (9-6) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 112 pitches. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Gary Matthews Sr. helped Stewart at the plate, he went 2 for 5, stroking two 2B's, and driving in 2 runs. Toronto scored 9 runs on 12 hits.
Thursday 6/23/1987: Boston's Pole severely injured
BOSTON - Boston is without its right-hander Dick Pole for at least 6-7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Cesar Cedeno in a game against Texas. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Spasms Back. Surgery will be performed next week. This season Pole compiled an ERA of 4.42, going 2-1 in 0 starts. He fanned 14 while giving up 17 hits in 18.1 innings.
Tuesday 6/21/1987: Chicago (N) has no chance in a NO-HITTER by Jerry Augustine
CHICAGO (N) - New York (N)'s lefty Jerry Augustine is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Chicago (N) on no hits. Paul Dade spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 7th inning. Augustine (7-3) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 105 pitches. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Ken Phelps helped Augustine at the plate, he stroked 3 hits in 3 AB, homering twice, scoring 2 runs with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Monday 6/20/1987: Player of the Week honors go to Charboneau and Ford
The American League's best player of the week was Milwaukee's Joe Charboneau, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. In 24 at bats he hit .417 with 3 HR and 8 RBI. Charboneau has hit 16 taters this year while batting .283. He adds 7 doubles, along with 44 runs scored. He's 3rd in the American League in RBIs and 5th in homeruns! San Diego's pitcher Dave Ford had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Ford was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.69. Along the way he struck out 4 in 16 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.

MONTREAL - Dave Ford had some fun again. Montreal hitters did not. San Diego's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 2 career shutouts in 184 games started. Ford (7-8) fanned 1 and walked 3, throwing 123 pitches. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' The hitting star for San Diego was first baseman Tom Brunansky, he stroked 1 hit in 3 AB. San Diego improved its record to 35-37, scoring 1 run on 5 hits.
