Monday 7/11/1987: Lloyd Moseby punishes Philadelphia with five hits
PHILADELPHIA - Houston's centerfielder Lloyd Moseby once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Philadelphia's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Monday. In the 1st inning he belted a RBI double off Ross Baumgarten. His 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Rob Woodward in the 5th inning, landed an estimated 434 feet from home plate. In the 9th inning he belted a double off Steve Bedrosian. He collected singles in the 3rd and in the 7th inning (one RBI). Lloyd scored 3 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .296. Houston scored 8 runs on 11 hits.
Monday 7/11/1987: Texas' Cedeno out for 4-5 weeks
TEXAS - Texas' players were scared when they had to watch Cesar Cedeno suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against New York (A). He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Cedeno will probaby miss 4-5 weeks. Fractured Hip was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Cesar has gone 71 for 276 (.257) this season, hitting 14 longballs and driving in 38 runs. He has scored 41 runs on his own.
Monday 7/11/1987: Los Angeles (N)'s Aikens wins Player of the Week award
Oakland's leftfielder Gary Pettis had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He hit .500 with 7 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 26 at bats. Gary is hitting .303 this year, with 96 hits in 317 at bats. He has driven in 47 runs, slugging .502. It's the 4th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s first baseman Willie Aikens. Willie pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .407 with 3 HR and 5 RBI while slugging .852.
Saturday 7/9/1987: Minnesota's Swan out for 5-6 weeks
MINNESOTA - Minnesota is without its ace Craig Swan for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Darren Daulton in a game against Oakland. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Swan was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Spasms Back. Opposing players hit .295 against Craig this season. While posting an ERA of 4.84 he went 0-8 in 10 starts, fanning 23 and walking 30 hitters.
Thursday 7/7/1987: Eddie Murray stars with 2000th career hit
ST. LOUIS - Eddie Murray got a standing ovation from 43962 fans in St. Louis, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. His best year so far was 1980 where he hit .333 with 33 homeruns and 119 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' He hit a single in the 2nd off Bryn Smith for number 2000.

ATLANTA - Atlanta's centerfielder Dale Murphy will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Atlanta and New York (N). The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Murphy collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Back Muscle. Dale is hitting .243 this year, with 66 hits in 272 at bats. He has driven in 30 runs, slugging .360.
