Monday 7/18/1987: Atlanta's Washington wins Player of the Week award
Ron Robinson of Detroit wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Robinson was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.08. Along the way he struck out 10 in 16.2 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .264 against Ron this season. While posting an ERA of 4.46 he went 6-7 in 20 starts, fanning 70 and walking 61 hitters. He has 4 complete games and 2 shutouts. Atlanta's second baseman U.L. Washington had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. U.L. was on fire, hitting .483 with 4 HR and 8 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 9 game hitting streak right now.
Thursday 7/14/1987: Rickey Henderson nabs five hits against Cincinnati
HOUSTON - Rickey Henderson is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. Number 2 in the 4th inning, a shot estimated at 414 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. His 4th hit, a solo homerun off Greg A. Harris in the 8th inning, landed an estimated 411 feet from home plate. It tied the ballgame at 5. In the 9th inning he belted a RBI double off John Smiley. His final hit proved to be the game winner as well! He had singles in the 1st and in the 5th inning . Rickey did drive in 3 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .302. Houston scored 6 runs on 11 hits.
Tuesday 7/12/1987: Steve Rogers fires NO-NO against New York (N)
SAN FRANCISCO - Age doesn't matter. At least San Francisco's right-hander Steve Rogers shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a no-hitter against New York (N), showing the great stuff that made him famous for years. Rogers (11-6) fanned 4 and walked 4, throwing 103 pitches. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Andre Dawson provided San Francisco with the offense Rogers needed as he went 1 for 4, blasting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. San Francisco scored 4 runs on 9 hits.
