Baseball fans, we are almost at the end of July and almost a month in since the summer solstice and the state of baseball has almost no new updates... other than Minnesota finally overtook the White Sox for the basement in the AL central.
Willie Aikens is just putting on a power display in the NL now with 32 round trippers, whereas in the AL, Mattingly's league leading 25 would only be 3rd best in the NL.
Julio Cruz in Detroit is just making pitchers look silly trying to hold him on first, as he has already amassed 63 stolen bases. At his current pace he should have 1000 total by the end of the season, becoming only the second guy to get 1000. He is only 19 back from 2nd place and just needs 114 more to take the all time spot from Carew. Odds are on him obliterating the record and setting it so high it is never challenged.
AL East
But back to the races, NYY is still the undisputed powerhouse of the AL, just crushing Boston that has the 5th best record in baseball by 14 games.
AL Central
KC and the Brewers are just separated by a game, in what continues to looks to be a duel to the death. Win or go home, second place will not make it past 10/1.
AL West
Seattle has started to make a little headway, currently enjoying a 3 game lead over Texas, but the Rangers are on a current hot streak winning 6 straight.
NL West
Here is still the best battle in the league with the Giants holding a scant 1 game lead over LA. Both these teams are the the best of the NL with no one in any division, besides the Yankees, able to hold a candle to them.
NL Central
The Pirates are running away and not even bothering to look back. Without some catastrophic event, they win the Central without breaking a sweat.
NL East
Apparently the Braves still have some fight in them as they have been able to claw back and reclaim 3 games to take a 1 game lead on the Mets. Like the AL Central this is do or die, and loser goes home, as the WC will not be coming from the East, without a colossal collapse from one of the teams in the west.
The race for worst is still being headed up by Cali, with Min trying to track down Cin for 2nd place. We know Piazza will be franchised, who else in 88 might get tagged with a FPR?
