KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, rightfielder Mel Hall, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 5 weeks. Torn Calf Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Hall has hit for a .305 average this season. He has 27 extra base hits along with 155 total bases, resulting in a .468 slugging percentage.
Monday 7/25/1987: Atlanta's Robinson wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Kansas City's Mel Hall this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Mel went 9 for 17 (.529), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 9 RBI. Don Robinson of Atlanta wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. Robinson was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.20. Along the way he struck out 5 in 15 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
Sunday 7/24/1987: Cincinnati's Young out for 5 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's rightfielder Mike D. Young hurt himself in the 6th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Mike D. Young will miss at least 5 weeks. Cincinnati wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Young had suffered a Broken Hand. While compiling an on base percentage of .315, Mike D. hit .269 and slugged .437. He has collected 49 runs batted in this year.
Sunday 7/24/1987: Keith Hernandez slams 3 HR
CALIFORNIA - Keith Hernandez was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Milwaukee to a 9-3 win over California by homering three times. In the 1st inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Tom Klawitter. His 2nd blast, a two-run homerun off Tom Klawitter in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 370 feet from home plate. A pitch from Nate Snell in the 7th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 364 feet from home plate in left field. Keith finished 3 for 3, scoring three times with 6 RBI. In 7377 career at bats, he has hit 192 homeruns and collected 1199 RBI. It's pretty obvious that he will enter the Hall of Fame some day!

PHILADELPHIA - Age doesn't matter. At least San Francisco's right-hander Steve Rogers shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Philadelphia, recording his 2nd shutout of the season. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Rogers (13-6) fanned 3 and walked 3, throwing 112 pitches. Lance Parrish provided San Francisco with the offense Rogers needed as he got 2 hits in 5 AB, hitting a homerun, and collecting 4 RBI. The final score of the game was 6-0.
