Saturday 7/30/1987: Steve Shields fires 2-hitter against Seattle
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's right-hander Steve Shields is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Seattle on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 5th time he has done it in his career. Shields (11-7) fanned 8 and walked 1, throwing 105 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Buddy Biancalana provided Milwaukee with the offense Shields needed as he got 1 hit in 3 AB, hitting a homerun. Milwaukee scored 2 runs on 4 hits.
Saturday 7/30/1987: Dave Righetti out for 5 weeks
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A) is without its lefty Dave Righetti for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Randy Bush in a game against California. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .208 against Dave this season. While posting an ERA of 2.19 he went 10-3 in 20 starts, fanning 72 and walking 44 hitters. Dave has pitched one shutout and one complete game.
Friday 7/29/1987: Oakland's Smith severely injured
OAKLAND - Oakland's pitcher Zane Smith was part of a scary incident that saw the left-hander being hit by a line drive in the 4th inning of the game between Oakland and Texas. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Smith will miss about 5-6 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Hand which will require surgery. This season Smith compiled an ERA of 3.84, going 14-7 in 26 starts. He fanned 81 while giving up 180 hits in 178.1 innings. Zane has pitched 2 shutouts and 5 complete games. He's 2nd in the American League in wins!
Wednesday 7/27/1987: St. Louis' Tewksbury severely injured
ST. LOUIS - When it rains, it pours. St. Louis' right-hander Bob Tewksbury will not pitch for at least 7-8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Philadelphia where he left the field in the 4th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. This season Tewksbury compiled an ERA of 3.14, going 6-7 in 21 starts. He fanned 53 while giving up 138 hits in 134.2 innings.
