The American League's best player of the week was Boston's Jim Rice, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. Jim pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .476 with 3 HR and 8 RBI while slugging 1.048. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 14 game hitting streak right now. New York (N)'s pitcher Mike Paxton had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Mike went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.56, while fanning 13 in 16 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Paxton compiled an ERA of 1.83, going 13-4 in 23 starts. He fanned 128 while giving up 136 hits in 176.2 innings. He has 6 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 2nd in the National League in ERA and 3rd in wins!
Sunday 8/7/1987: Seattle's Mike Easler gets milestone hit
DETROIT - Seattle's third baseman Mike Easler already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Mike collected 302 homeruns and 1254 RBI in 12 seasons. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' His hit in the 1st inning was a single off Ron Robinson.
Thursday 8/4/1987: Don Robinson pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
ATLANTA - Don Robinson took the mound and never left. And New York (N) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Atlanta's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 12 career shutouts in 235 games started. Robinson (8-7) struck out 7 and issued 3 BB, throwing 72 of 121 pitches for strikes. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Mark Brouhard provided Atlanta with the offense Robinson needed as he stroked 1 hit in 3 AB, blasting a homerun, with 2 RBI. Atlanta scored 2 runs on 6 hits.

The American League's best player of the week was Baltimore's Wayne Gross, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Wayne was on fire, hitting .476 with 1 HR and 8 RBI. Los Angeles (N)'s third baseman Masayuki Kakefu had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Kakefu helped his team with an average of .474 and 8 RBI in 19 at bats. His season numbers are: .262 AVG, 88 hits, 17 doubles, one triple and 24 homeruns, along with 75 RBI and 63 runs scored. He's 3rd in the National League in RBIs and 6th in homeruns!
