Tuesday 8/23/1987: Mike Norris dominates Los Angeles (N), gives up just 2 hits
PHILADELPHIA - Los Angeles (N)'s bats were sleeping, and Philadelphia's Mike Norris gave them no chance to wake up. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 2nd shutout of the season. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Norris (11-7) struck out 7 and issued 1 BB, throwing 63 of 98 pitches for strikes. Chet Lemon provided Philadelphia with the offense Norris needed as he stroked 1 hit in 3 AB, homering once, and collecting 2 RBI. Philadelphia improved its record to 59-65, scoring 3 runs on 6 hits.
Tuesday 8/23/1987: Montreal's Mitch Webster pounds six hits
SAN FRANCISCO - Mitch Webster hits 'em where they ain't. San Francisco certainly agrees as Montreal's centerfielder unloaded six hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. His 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Mike R. Jackson in the 2nd inning, cleared the fence in center field. His 3rd hit was a double off Mike R. Jackson in the 4th inning. His 5th hit, off Mike Krukow in the 6th inning, was a GRAND SLAM and cleared the fence in right-center. He had singles in the 1st inning , in the 6th (one RBI) and in the 8th inning . Mitch did drive in 7 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He now has a total of 121 hits this season, accounting for a .281 batting average. Montreal improved its record to 67-58, scoring 16 runs on 17 hits.
Monday 8/22/1987: Lezcano (BAL) and Brunansky (SDG) win P.O.W. award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Baltimore's centerfielder Sixto Lezcano. He hit .619 with 12 RBI and slugged .952 in 21 at bats. The National League's best player of the week was San Diego's Tom Brunansky, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Tom was on fire, hitting .458 with 3 HR and 13 RBI. Tom managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Brunansky has hit 32 bombs this year while batting .259. He adds 19 doubles, along with 73 runs scored. He's 3rd in the National League in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns!
