Thursday 9/1/1987: Hood (BOS) and Mason (CHN) win monthly pitcher award
It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Boston's pitcher Don Hood. His record of 3-0 in 5 was among the leagues best this month. In 42.1 innings of work he allowed just 19 hits while striking out 35, compiling an ERA of just 1.06. In 26 starts this year Don struck out 182 batters in 216.1 innings of work. His ERA is 1.79, his record 18-2. He has 12 complete games and one shutout. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Chicago (N)'s Roger Mason had a terrific August, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. He went 2-1 in August and finished the month with an ERA of 0.76. He struck out 22 in 35.2 innings. Roger pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .241 against Roger this season. While posting an ERA of 3.73 he went 7-10 in 26 starts, fanning 131 and walking 58 hitters. Roger has pitched one shutout and one complete game.
Thursday 9/1/1987: Montreal's Wallach named Batter of the Month
Baltimore's centerfielder Sixto Lezcano had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. Sixto was on fire, hitting .467 with 10 homeruns and 29 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .420, Sixto hit .384 and slugged .631. He has collected 47 runs batted in this year. The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Tim Wallach, Montreal's starting third baseman. He hit .307 with 25 RBI and slugged .703 in 101 at bats. Tim has gone 127 for 475 (.267) this season, hitting 25 longballs and driving in 90 runs. He has scored 69 runs on his own.
Tuesday 8/30/1987: Luis Leal (CHN) will miss 4 weeks
CHICAGO (N) - When it rains, it pours. Chicago (N)'s right-hander Luis Leal will not pitch for at least 4 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Philadelphia where he left the field in the 6th inning. Chicago (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Leal had suffered a Torn Tricep Muscle. This season Leal compiled an ERA of 3.88, going 7-15 in 27 starts. He fanned 76 while giving up 164 hits in 162.1 innings. Luis has pitched one shutout and one complete game.
Tuesday 8/30/1987: Dwight Gooden shuts out California on 2 hits
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's right-hander Dwight Gooden is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking California on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 5th time he has done it in his career. Gooden (15-8) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking none, throwing 118 pitches. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Mike Lavalliere helped Gooden at the plate, he stroked 5 hits in 5 AB, hitting a homerun, hitting a double, with three runs scored with 6 RBI. The final score of the game was 15-0.
Monday 8/29/1987: Pittsburgh's Winfield wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Seattle's Mike Easler, who wins the award for the 8th time in his career. Mike went 10 for 22 (.455), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 10 RBI. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Dave Winfield wins his 6th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Dave went 13 for 26 (.500), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 8 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .361, Dave hit .315 and slugged .490. He has collected 64 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Sunday 8/28/1987: Boston's Hall out for 8 weeks
BOSTON - When it rains, it pours. Boston's southpaw Tom Hall will not pitch for at least 8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Baltimore where he left the field in the 13th inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Tricep Muscle which will require surgery. This season Hall compiled an ERA of 4.86, going 4-6 in 11 starts. He fanned 45 while giving up 77 hits in 74 innings.
