Thursday 9/22/1987: John Smoltz quiets Pittsburgh bats with shutout
PITTSBURGH - Atlanta's right-hander John Smoltz didn't look unexperienced at all. The 20 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Pittsburgh, recording his 1st shutout of the season. Smoltz (10-10) struck out 5 and walked 2, throwing 63 of 101 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' The hitting star for Atlanta was centerfielder Henry Cotto, he went 2 for 2, hitting a homerun, scoring twice and collecting 3 RBI. Atlanta scored 6 runs on 7 hits.
Monday 9/19/1987: Boggs and Rayford win Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Boston's Wade Boggs this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Wade pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .577 with 3 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .962. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to New York (N)'s rightfielder Floyd Rayford. Floyd was on fire, hitting .379 with 3 HR and 11 RBI.
Sunday 9/18/1987: Mike Boddicker fires 1-hitter against Toronto
OAKLAND - Toronto's hitters looked uncomfortable, and Oakland's Mike Boddicker didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 1-hitter. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Boddicker (17-10) struck out 8 and walked 2, throwing 56 of 96 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Oakland was designated hitter Jim Eisenreich, he got 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once, and driving in 3 runs. Oakland improved its record to 76-73, scoring 5 runs on 5 hits.
