Saturday 10/1/1987: Atlanta's Fulgham named Pitcher of the Month
Kansas City's Dave Frost had a terrific September, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He went 5-0 in September and finished the month with an ERA of 0.89. He struck out 34 in 40.1 innings. Dave got two complete game shutouts as well! This season Frost compiled an ERA of 3.26, going 15-12 in 32 starts. He fanned 182 while giving up 187 hits in 196 innings. Dave has pitched 2 shutouts and 2 complete games. Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is Atlanta's John Fulgham. He had an ERA of just 1.25 in 50.1 innings of work in which he struck out 39 hitters. His record in September is 4-0. In 34 starts this year John struck out 166 batters in 262.2 innings of work. His ERA is 1.82, his record 24-3. John has pitched 4 shutouts and 9 complete games. He's 2nd in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins!
Saturday 10/1/1987: Batter of the Month award winners announced
The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to Milwaukee's Keith Hernandez this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .512 and hit .440, while driving in 29 runs. His season numbers are: .318 AVG, 188 hits, 31 doubles, 2 triples and 23 longballs, along with 111 RBI and 91 runs scored. He's 10th in the American League in batting and 8th in RBI! Atlanta's third baseman Mark Brouhard had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. Mark went 27 for 91 (.297), while hitting 9 HR and collecting 25 RBI. Brouhard has walked 66 times this year and posts a .360 OBP. While batting .274, 141 for 514, he has driven in 110 runs. He's 4th in the National League in RBIs and 4th in homeruns!
Friday 9/30/1987: Seattle's Mike Easler clears fence three times
TORONTO - Mike Easlerwas in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Seattle to a 8-2 win over Toronto by homering three times. A pitch from Dave Stieb in the 3rd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 422 feet from home plate in right-center. A 443 foot drive to center field marked his 2nd bomb, a solo homerun off Dave Stieb in the 5th inning. Number 3 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 371 feet, cleared the wall in left field. Mike finished with 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring three times with 5 RBI. His homerun total this year is 28, along with 133 RBI. The induction into the Hall of Fame is almost a sure thing for him now! Keith Hernandez was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 7/24/1987.
Wednesday 9/28/1987: Bill Wegman (KCR) will miss 5-6 weeks
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's pitcher Bill Wegman was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 5th inning of the game between Kansas City and Oakland. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Wegman will miss about 5-6 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Fractured Hand. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .308 against Bill this season. While posting an ERA of 6.17 he went 7-13 in 31 starts, fanning 95 and walking 35 hitters.
Tuesday 9/27/1987: Boston's Jim Rice gets milestone hit
NEW YORK (A) - Boston's Jim Rice showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against New York (A) on Tuesday. His best year so far was 1985 where he hit .287 with 28 homeruns and 84 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' With no outs in the 6th inning, Jim drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
Monday 9/26/1987: Pittsburgh's Dave Henderson laces five hits
PITTSBURGH - Dave Henderson hits 'em where they ain't. Philadelphia certainly agrees as Pittsburgh's leftfielder unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. Number 1 in the 1st inning, a shot estimated at 432 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. Number 2 in the 2nd inning accounted for a two-run double. His 3rd hit was a double off Barry Cort in the 4th inning. His 4th hit, a solo homerun off Pete Ladd in the 5th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. A RBI double off Tim Belcher in the 7th inning accounted for his 5th hit. Dave did drive in 5 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He is hitting .262 this season, with 35 HR and 103 RBI. Pittsburgh improved its record to 91-67, scoring 11 runs on 11 hits.
Monday 9/26/1987: Player of the Week honors go to Martinez and Horner
Edgar Martinez from Seattle wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. In 26 at bats he hit .615 with 4 HR and 11 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 18 games. The National League's best player of the week was Atlanta's Bob Horner, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. In 23 at bats he hit .435 with 4 HR and 11 RBI. Horner has hit 24 bombs this year while batting .233. He adds 39 doubles, along with 78 runs scored.
Saturday 9/24/1987: Pittsburgh's Puckett out for 6 weeks
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's centerfielder Kirby Puckett will miss about 6 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 9th inning of the game between Pittsburgh and Los Angeles (N). He dove for a drive off the bat of Masayuki Kakefu, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. Puckett was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Fractured Ulna. Puckett has hit for a .246 average this season. He has 44 extra base hits along with 217 total bases, resulting in a .396 slugging percentage.
