The Expos have been one of the better teams the past few years, averaging over 90 wins. Even so they lose money year after year and have had to move expensive players just to cut costs. They don't have the revenue to take the next step so after much discussion and anticipation it has been decided to renovate the stadium and add seats hoping to attract more fans. Hopefully the fans will come and the expos won't have to keep pinching pennies and sending away big contracts.
They have been putting money aside for years and currently have 100 million earmarked for improving the stadium. They will spend all of that trying to bring in fans and show the league that baseball is not just america's pastime but has its place in hockey town also.
Owner Greeme said that a few years ago it was decided that it was time for a change, either a major renovation or a complete replacement. After studying the issue carefully it was decided to save Olympic Stadium and renovate it rather than replace it.
“The status quo is not an option. So it is going to be one or the other, it is going to be a retro(fit) or new (stadium)” Greeme said in 1985.
The plan was first to prove that the Expos could put a quality product on the field and they did. In the last 3 years the Expos have had their best 3 years of all time, even making the world series one year. But that came at a heavy financial cost as the expos lost almost 40 million dollars in the last 3 years.
As Greeme has said management has done its part by spending the big bucks and the players have done their part by producing on the filed, now it is time for the fans to do their part and show up at the ball park to root root root for the home team.
One of the ideas being tossed around is to lower the ticket prices in order to get more people in the seats. Last year fans in attendance brought in over 33 million.
In addition, the current seating capacity of 45,757 will be yesterday's news and an additional 10,000+ seats will be added. If the expos can fill the stadium by lowering seats to $9 that will give the team an extra 9 mil in revenue a year.
Team officials are confident that the renovated park will bring new fans to the stadium and more profits to the team's coffers. That will enable the team to continue spending money in order to bring in top talent. The Expos have continued spending money in the offseason most notably bringing in Willie Upshaw, one of the most feared sluggers in fa. They also brought in Randy jones to shore up the starting pitching although some have said that his age has already caught up to him.
The fans are already catching expo fever. One pundit says that he can feel a drastic increase in fan loyalty in the air. The fans feel that the expos have proven they are deserving of the loyalty. Fan interest has also improved somewhat with the renovated stadium.
The total cost of the renovation will be 100 million dollars of which the expos will pay 75 million.
That leaves them 33,333,333 to add seats of which they will pay 25 million
Expanding from 45,757 to 50,000 seats: $1,500 per seat = 6,364,500
Expanding from 50,001 to 55,000 seats: $2,000 per seat = 10,000,000
Expanding from 55,001 to 59,242 seats: $4,000 per seat = 16,968,000
100,000 mil will be paid in cash
