Wednesday 6/1/1988: Beattie and Denny receive Pitcher of the Month award
Minnesota's Jim Beattie had a terrific May, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He struck out 29 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 1-2 while pitching 29 innings. His ERA in May was 0.79. Jim has a record of 3-6 this season, with an ERA of 2.51. In 75.1 Innings he was able to strike out 55 batters. John Denny couldn't have pitched much better than he did in May, and the National League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His ERA of just 0.86 helped him to a 4-1 record in May. He worked 41.2 innings, striking out 34 hitters while walking 15. In 12 starts this year John struck out 70 batters in 81.2 innings of work. His ERA is 1.65, his record 6-1. He's 8th in the National League in ERA and 7th in wins!
Wednesday 6/1/1988: Batter of the Month award winners announced
The American League's best player of the month was Baltimore's Dave Winfield, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Dave was on fire, hitting .357 with 8 homeruns and 26 RBI. He has hit 13 longballs while batting .349 this season. His 76 hits and 15 walks add up to a .391 on-base percentage. He's 6th in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 3rd in RBI! It's the 2nd time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s leftfielder Kirk Gibson. Gibson helped his team with an average of .422 and 27 RBI in 102 at bats. Gibson has hit 4 taters this year while batting .312. He adds 17 doubles, along with 24 runs scored. He's 4th in the National League in batting and 5th in RBI!
Tuesday 5/31/1988: San Diego has no chance in a 2-hitter by Dave Dravecky
NEW YORK (N) - Dave Dravecky had some fun again. San Diego hitters did not. New York (N)'s left-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 2 career shutouts in 77 games started. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Dravecky (5-3) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 2, throwing 127 pitches. New York (N)'s catcher Ozzie Virgil Jr. finished with 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once, with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Dravecky. New York (N) improved its record to 34-21, scoring 4 runs on 7 hits.
Monday 5/30/1988: Walk and Doran win Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Chicago (A)'s Bob Walk, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Bob went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.55, while fanning 13 in 16.1 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Walk compiled an ERA of 2.11, going 4-1 in 11 starts. He fanned 57 while giving up 55 hits in 76.2 innings. Bob has pitched one shutout and one complete game. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Bill D. Doran, Los Angeles (N)'s starting second baseman. He had an on base percentage of .586 and hit .577, while driving in 11 runs. Bill D. managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Bill D. is hitting .302 this year, with 52 hits in 172 at bats. He has driven in 22 runs, slugging .471.
