CHICAGO (N) - When it rains, it pours. Chicago (N)'s right-hander Luis Leal will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against New York (N) where he left the field in the 4th inning. Chicago (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Leal had suffered a Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. His ERA of 3.58 helped him to a 2-4 record this year. He struck out 43 and walked 9 in 75.1 innings.
Monday 6/6/1988: Player of the Week honors go to Pecota and Leonard
Bill Pecota wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .500 with 8 RBI and slugged 1.125 in 24 at bats. This year Pecota drove in 24 and scored 19 runs while batting .331 with 7 homeruns. Jeffrey Leonard wins his 7th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .522 with 8 RBI and slugged .957 in 23 at bats. Jeffrey is hitting .317 this year, with 70 hits in 221 at bats. He has driven in 34 runs, slugging .579. He's 3rd in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 7th in RBI!
Sunday 6/5/1988: Minnesota has no chance in a 1-hitter by Mike Moore
MINNESOTA - Oakland's Mike Moore overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Minnesota had no chance, collecting just one hit against the right-hander. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Moore (9-4) fanned 5 and walked 3, throwing 125 pitches. The hitting star for Oakland was catcher Darren Daulton, he finished with 1 hit in 1 AB, stroking a double, and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 6-0.

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's players were scared when they had to watch Tony Phillips suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against Chicago (N). He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Phillips will probaby miss 5 weeks. Broken Finger was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's right-hander Dan Petry is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Diego on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 21st time he has done it in his career. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Petry (7-2) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 1, throwing 115 pitches. The hitting star for Pittsburgh was leftfielder Dave Henderson, he stroked 1 hit in 4 AB, stroking a double, with 2 RBI. Pittsburgh improved its record to 36-21, scoring 7 runs on 12 hits.

HOUSTON - Atlanta's right-hander Greg Maddux didn't look unexperienced at all. The 22 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Houston, recording his 3rd shutout of the season. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Maddux (8-1) struck out 6 and walked 1, throwing 59 of 97 pitches for strikes. Julio Cruz helped Maddux at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a double. The final score of the game was 1-0.
