Cubs send P-Paul LaPalme, CF-Johnny Groth and 5 million dollars to the Phillies for LF-Leon Wagner (AA), 3B-Ted Kazanski and Philadelphia's 3rd round draft choice in the up-coming amateur draft.
After LaPalme's PD spike last sim I was really torn on this deal. I had been discussing him with the Gur's for a week or so (prior to PD spike) and after the spike I had other interest. He's willing to re-sign for next to nothing, and getting 3 years cheap out of him in my rotation while my kids arrived has some value, but he's 32 and certainly not in the long term plans. Being able to move Groth's salary to clear space for the young OF's was appealing. Groth certainly could have started the rest of this year, and probably next, but at some point he was going to become an expensive backup.
Wagner is young and the Brilliant in homers was very appealing to me, although he's still going to need some development to be a good starter I think. Kazanski's ability to play good defense at a number of infield positions and get on base gives him some value and may be "start-able" with some development. The 3rd was a throw-in and I have no expectations for it at all.
Place Kaz in AAA at 3B in place of Regalado. Same spot in lineup. Put Wagner in AA, move Burton to CF and let Wagner play LF. Bat him 4th and move everyone else down a spot. Call up Baczewski and put him as my 2nd MR to replace LaPalme. Call up Altman and put him in CF to replace Groth. Just put him at the same spot in the lineup vs. righties. Vs. lefties put him 7th and slide everybody else up 1 spot.
Extend LaPalme before processing the deal.
