Cleveland's pitcher Dwight Gooden had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Chicago (N)'s Roy Smalley III this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .552 and hit .536, while driving in 14 runs. Roy has gone 70 for 233 (.300) this season, hitting 18 bombs and driving in 56 runs. He has scored 37 runs on his own. He's 7th in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
Sunday 6/12/1988: Pittsburgh's McLemore severely injured
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's second baseman Mark T. McLemore will miss about 7-8 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 1st inning of the game between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. He fielded a ball off the bat of Chet Lemon, threw a bullet to first and immediately signaled that he's not OK. Torn Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Mark T. has gone 47 for 197 (.239) this season, hitting one tater and driving in 14 runs. He has scored 24 runs on his own.
Friday 6/10/1988: Sixto Lezcano ropes 2000th career hit
TORONTO - Baltimore's centerfielder Sixto Lezcano joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! In 13 years of big league action so far, Sixto has compiled a batting average of .293, along with 163 homeruns and 879 RBI. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.' His hit in the 7th inning was a single off Brad Lesley.
