Texas' pitcher Walt Terrell is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in June. He started 6 games in June, going 4-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.95 in 47.1 innings. Walt fanned 32 hitters. His ERA of 1.69 helped him to a 11-2 record this year. He struck out 103 and walked 35 in 133 innings. Walt has pitched one shutout and 3 complete games. The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to Chicago (N)'s Roy Smalley III this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s right-hander Scott Garrelts is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Kansas City on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 2nd time he has done it in his career. Garrelts (10-2) fanned 5 and walked 2, throwing 116 pitches. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Ed Amelung helped Garrelts at the plate, he got 2 hits in 3 AB, and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Monday 6/27/1988: Mike Moore out for 5-6 weeks
OAKLAND - When it rains, it pours. Oakland's right-hander Mike Moore will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (A) where he left the field in the 7th inning. Ruptured Tricep Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Moore compiled an ERA of 3.50, going 9-6 in 17 starts. He fanned 74 while giving up 121 hits in 123.1 innings. Mike has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games. He's 6th in the American League in wins!

DETROIT - Great days are rare. But not for Toronto's right-hander Dave Stewart. Detroit found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 18th time he has done it in his career. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Stewart (4-8) struck out 4 and issued 1 BB, throwing 66 of 102 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Toronto was first baseman Matt Winters, he finished 2 for 4, hitting a homerun, scoring two runs. Toronto scored 5 runs on 8 hits.

NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s first baseman Don Mattingly will miss at least 6 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Back Muscle.
