Monday 8/22/1988: Fred Lynn has 2000th career hits
DETROIT - Detroit's centerfielder Fred Lynn already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. His hit in the 1st inning was a two run homerun off Zane Smith. His best year so far was 1977 where he hit .324 with 24 homeruns and 93 RBI. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!'
Monday 8/22/1988: Moose Haas pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
BOSTON - Moose Haas took the mound and never left. And Boston hitters couldn't touch him at all. Texas' right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 9 career shutouts in 188 games started. Tim Teufel spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with no outs in the 5th inning. Haas (6-6) struck out 7 and walked none, throwing 72 of 102 pitches for strikes. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Texas' leftfielder Dwayne Murphy stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting two dingers, scoring three times and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Haas. Texas improved its record to 63-60, scoring 8 runs on 10 hits.
Monday 8/22/1988: Mattingly (NYA) and Christenson (MON) win P.O.W. award
New York (A)'s first baseman Don Mattingly had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Don went 14 for 25 (.560), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 14 RBI. Don managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. He now has homered in 4 consecutive games as well! The National League's best player of the week was Montreal's Larry Christenson, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Larry went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.13, while fanning 9 in 16 innings of work. A complete game added to his brilliant performance. In 29 starts this year Larry struck out 139 batters in 188.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.53, his record 11-2.
Thursday 8/18/1988: John Fulgham pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
HOUSTON - Atlanta's right-hander John Fulgham is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Houston on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 18th time he has done it in his career. Fulgham (12-7) struck out 6 and walked 2, throwing 59 of 100 pitches for strikes. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Atlanta's shortstop U.L. Washington stroked 2 hits in 3 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Fulgham. Atlanta scored 5 runs on 7 hits.
