Thursday 9/1/1988: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Milwaukee's Steve Shields had a terrific August, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. His ERA of just 1.55 helped him to a 5-0 record in August. He worked 46.1 innings, striking out 48 hitters while walking 14. In 28 starts this year Steve struck out 215 batters in 211.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.64, his record 16-5. Steve has pitched 3 shutouts and 6 complete games. He's 8th in the American League in ERA and 4th in wins! The best month of August in the National League certainly had Atlanta's right-hander John Fulgham, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He started 6 games in August, going 4-2 and compiling an ERA of 1.13 in 48 innings. John fanned 40 hitters. John pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .173 against John this season. While posting an ERA of 1.78 he went 13-8 in 29 starts, fanning 145 and walking 70 hitters. John has pitched 2 shutouts and 6 complete games. He's 3rd in the National League in ERA and 10th in wins!
Thursday 9/1/1988: Chicago (N)'s Caminiti named Batter of the Month
It's the 1st time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Baltimore's second baseman Chico Walker. Chico pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .387 with 7 and 24 RBI while slugging .622. Walker has hit 23 longballs this year while batting .347. He adds 19 doubles, along with 85 runs scored. He's 3rd in the American League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 5th in RBI! Chicago (N)'s third baseman Ken Caminiti had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. He had an on base percentage of .443 and hit .396, while driving in 16 runs. His season features a batting average of .314 (138 hits in 439 AB), 30 doubles, 3 triples and 8 homeruns. Caminiti collected 64 RBI and 71 runs as well. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Tuesday 8/30/1988: Fred Manrique out for 6 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's second baseman Fred Manrique will miss about 6 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 3rd inning of the game between Cincinnati and San Francisco. He fielded a ball off the bat of Barry Bonds, threw a bullet to first and immediately signaled that he's not OK. After being taken to a local hospital, Manrique was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Strained Bicep Muscle. His season features a batting average of .204 (74 hits in 362 AB), 17 doubles, no triples and 9 bombs. Manrique collected 43 RBI and 41 runs as well.
Tuesday 8/30/1988: Buddy Bell has 2000th career hits
CLEVELAND - Toronto's players had every reason to congratulate Buddy Bell, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! Along with his 2000 hits, Buddy collected 212 homeruns and 1187 RBI in 16 seasons. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.' His hit in the 3rd inning was a single off Kirk McCaskill.
Monday 8/29/1988: Dwyer (MIN) and Caminiti (CHN) win P.O.W. award
The American League's best player of the week was Minnesota's Jim Dwyer, who wins the award for the 11th time in his career. He hit .480 with 9 RBI and slugged .840 in 25 at bats. Ken Caminiti from Chicago (N) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He had an on base percentage of .556 and hit .542, while driving in 6 runs. This year Caminiti drove in 63 and scored 71 runs while batting .311 with 8 bombs. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Saturday 8/27/1988: Mike Kingery (CHN) will miss 6-7 weeks
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s centerfielder Mike Kingery will miss at least 6-7 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Pulled Achilles Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This year Kingery drove in 53 and scored 63 runs while batting .257 with 20 longballs.
Thursday 8/25/1988: Silvio Martinez shuts out Philadelphia on 2 hits
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's right-hander Silvio Martinez is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Philadelphia on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 2nd time he has done it in his career. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Martinez (5-15) fanned 4 and walked 1, throwing 101 pitches. Chili Davis provided San Diego with the offense Martinez needed as he finished with 2 hits in 3 AB, hitting a homerun. San Diego scored 2 runs on 4 hits.
Wednesday 8/24/1988: Minnesota's Butler out for 5 weeks
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's centerfielder Brett Butler hurt himself in the 6th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Brett Butler will miss at least 5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Spasms Back which will require surgery. Brett has gone 116 for 448 (.259) this season, hitting 4 longballs and driving in 43 runs. He has scored 62 runs on his own.
