Tuesday 9/6/1988: Atlanta has no chance in a 2-hitter by Mike Paxton
NEW YORK (N) - Mike Paxton had some fun again. Atlanta hitters did not. New York (N)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 12 career shutouts in 161 games started. Paxton (12-7) fanned 5 and walked 1, throwing 101 pitches. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' New York (N)'s third baseman Steve Balboni collected 1 hit in 4 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Paxton. New York (N) scored 3 runs on 6 hits.
Tuesday 9/6/1988: Jorge Orta collects 2000th hit against Detroit
DETROIT - Cleveland's third baseman Jorge Orta joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! Along with his 2000 hits, Jorge collected 214 homeruns and 1049 RBI in 15 seasons. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' With no outs in the 8th inning, Jorge drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
Monday 9/5/1988: Lance Parrish socks six hits for San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO - On Monday, San Francisco's catcher Lance Parrish displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Houston, punishing their pitchers with six hits. A pitch from Mike Witt in the 3rd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 442 feet from home plate in center field. His 5th hit, a two-run homerun off Steve Busby in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in right field. He collected singles in the 1st inning , in the 4th , in the 6th inning (one RBI) and in the 8th (one RBI). Lance did drive in 5 while scoring 4 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 138 hits in 459 at bats, resulting in a .301 batting average. San Francisco scored 19 runs on 23 hits.
Monday 9/5/1988: Texas' Walker severely injured
TEXAS - Toronto's Rick A. Anderson drilled Texas' rightfielder Larry Walker in the 1st inning. He was slow getting up and had to leave the game. Larry Walker will miss at least 5 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Fractured Hand. Larry is hitting .316 this year, with 162 hits in 512 at bats. He has driven in 92 runs, slugging .527. He's 8th in the American League in batting and 7th in RBI!
Monday 9/5/1988: Player of the Week honors go to Ripken and Gallego
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Cal Ripken, Cleveland's starting shortstop. In 26 at bats he hit .462 with 2 HR and 13 RBI. His season numbers are: .277 AVG, 145 hits, 44 doubles, 6 triples and 16 homeruns, along with 113 RBI and 69 runs scored. Philadelphia's second baseman Mike Gallego had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. In 19 at bats he hit .684 with 1 HR and 6 RBI. His season features a batting average of .275 (125 hits in 454 AB), 16 doubles, no triples and 9 longballs. Gallego collected 45 RBI and 48 runs as well.
Friday 9/2/1988: St. Louis' Wade Boggs laces 2000th career hit
MONTREAL - Wade Boggs got a standing ovation from 45751 fans in Montreal, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. His best year so far was 1986 where he hit .333 with 8 homeruns and 79 RBI. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!' He hit a three run homerun in the 11th off Mark Littell for number 2000.
Friday 9/2/1988: John Fulgham turns in great performance against Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA - Atlanta's right-hander John Fulgham is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Philadelphia on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 19th time he has done it in his career. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Fulgham (14-8) struck out 3 and walked 1, throwing 65 of 107 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Atlanta was centerfielder Henry Cotto, he got 2 hits in 4 AB, doubling once. Atlanta improved its record to 87-47, scoring 2 runs on 5 hits.
Thursday 9/1/1988: Bob Walk fires 1-hitter against Minnesota
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Bob Walk is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Minnesota on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 10th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Butch Wynegar singled with no outs in the 5th inning. Walk (11-6) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking none, throwing 94 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Chicago (A)'s designated hitter Keith Hernandez finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, doubling once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Walk. Chicago (A) improved its record to 67-66, scoring 8 runs on 10 hits.
