CINCINNATI - St. Louis' lefty Fernando Valenzuela is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. Rafael Palmeiro spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with two outs in the 5th inning. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Valenzuela (12-11) fanned 7 and walked none, throwing 112 pitches. St. Louis' shortstop Tim Raines Sr. went 1 for 4, homering once, and collecting 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Valenzuela. The final score of the game was 9-0.
Wednesday 9/14/1988: Paul Molitor stars with 2000th career hit
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's second baseman Paul Molitor already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Paul collected 108 homeruns and 885 RBI in 11 seasons. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.' With two outs in the 6th inning, Paul drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
Monday 9/12/1988: Baltimore's Walker wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Baltimore's Chico Walker, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .560 and hit .476, while driving in 6 runs. It's the 3rd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Philadelphia's shortstop Alan Trammell. Trammell helped his team with an average of .529 and 7 RBI in 17 at bats. Trammell has walked 40 times this year and posts a .302 OBP. While batting .245, 122 for 497, he has driven in 69 runs.

PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's right-hander Dan Petry is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just 2 hits. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 24th time he has done it in his career. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Petry (19-4) fanned 8 and walked 2, throwing 122 pitches. The hitting star for Pittsburgh was centerfielder Andres Mora, he went 2 for 3, hitting a homerun, and collecting 2 RBI. Pittsburgh scored 3 runs on 5 hits.

BOSTON - Chicago (A)'s lefty Scott McGregor made some history today, firing a perfect game against Boston. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. The crowd of 32454 gave him a standing ovation when teammates carried him off the field on their shoulders. McGregor (15-13) fanned 2 and walked none, throwing 80 pitches. 'Today I just felt great. I had a good feeling while warming up, and I knew something special was about to happen.' Danny Tartabull provided Chicago (A) with the offense McGregor needed as he went 1 for 3, stroking a double. The final score of the game was 2-0.

ST. LOUIS - John Fulgham had some fun again. St. Louis hitters did not. Atlanta's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 20 career shutouts in 262 games started. Fulgham (15-8) fanned 5 and walked 5, throwing 124 pitches. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Julio Cruz provided Atlanta with the offense Fulgham needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB. Atlanta improved its record to 89-50, scoring 1 run on 5 hits.
