Thursday 10/27/1988: Seattle's Eckersley earns Cy Young Award
All the hard work finally paid off for Seattle's Dennis Eckersley. The right-hander was named the Cy Young Award winner in the American League today. Opposing players hit .222 against Dennis this season. While posting an ERA of 2.02 he went 23-5 in 32 starts, fanning 182 and walking 43 hitters. He has 15 complete games and 7 shutouts. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Eckersley wins the award for the 2nd time in his 12-year career. Pittsburgh's right-hander Dan Petry was untouchable all year long. His work paid off today as the National League named him the Cy Young Award winner! Dan has a record of 22-4 this season, with an ERA of 1.40. In 263.2 Innings he was able to strike out 238 batters. This 23 year old kid will probably have a long and successful career! Ron is hitting .266 this year, with 128 hits in 481 at bats. He has driven in 67 runs, slugging .399. Houston's leftfielder Shane Mack has worked hard to reach the big leagues. His work paid off today as the National League named him the Rookie of the Year Award winner! Shane has gone 143 for 589 (.243) this season, hitting 4 taters and driving in 53 runs. He has scored 70 runs on his own.
