Monday 5/9/1989: Walker and Brouhard win Player of the Week award
Larry Walker from Texas wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. He hit .600 with 4 RBI and slugged .900 in 20 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 9 games. He has hit one longball while batting .343 this season. His 36 hits and 11 walks add up to a .417 on-base percentage. He's 7th in the American League in batting! Mark Brouhard wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .450 with 9 RBI and slugged .850 in 20 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .434, Mark hit .385 and slugged .667. He has collected 31 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
Saturday 5/7/1989: John Denny shuts out Philadelphia on 2 hits
PHILADELPHIA - Great days are rare. But not for San Francisco's right-hander John Denny. Philadelphia found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 14th time he has done it in his career. Denny (6-0) struck out 4 and walked 2, throwing 65 of 108 pitches for strikes. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' San Francisco's catcher Lance Parrish finished with 2 hits in 5 AB, doubling once, scoring twice and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Denny. San Francisco improved its record to 16-17, scoring 9 runs on 12 hits.

ATLANTA - Great days are rare. But not for Atlanta's right-hander Greg Maddux. San Diego found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Maddux (5-2) struck out 8 and issued 1 BB, throwing 73 of 113 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Atlanta was second baseman Julio Cruz, he finished with 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring 2 runs with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 9-0.
Thursday 5/5/1989: Danny Tartabull (CHA) will miss 4 weeks
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s Danny Tartabull suffered a serious injury Thursday in a game against Oakland. Tartabull fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 4 weeks. Chicago (A) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Tartabull had suffered a Pulled Anterior Cruciate Ligament. Danny has gone 16 for 51 (.314) this season, hitting one homerun and driving in 2 runs. He has scored 6 runs on his own.
