Monday 5/16/1989: Dave Stewart quiets Texas bats with shutout
TORONTO - Dave Stewart took the mound and never left. And Texas hitters couldn't touch him at all. Toronto's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 20 career shutouts in 343 games started. Stewart (5-2) struck out 5 and walked 1, throwing 65 of 99 pitches for strikes. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Spike Owen provided Toronto with the offense Stewart needed as he went 4 for 4, hitting a homerun, scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Monday 5/16/1989: Barfield (MIN) and O'Brien (SFG) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Jesse Barfield, Minnesota's starting rightfielder. He hit .548 with 9 RBI and slugged .968 in 31 at bats. He has hit 5 bombs while batting .333 this season. His 49 hits and 18 walks add up to a .405 on-base percentage. He's 7th in the American League in batting and 3rd in RBI! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Francisco's Pete M. O'Brien this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 22 at bats he hit .545 with 2 HR and 8 RBI. O'Brien has hit 4 homeruns this year while batting .312. He adds 6 doubles, along with 21 runs scored. He's 4th in the National League in batting!
Saturday 5/14/1989: Danny Cox out for full season
CALIFORNIA - California's right-hander Danny Cox experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 1st inning of the game against New York (A), Cox complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Cox was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Shoulder. His ERA of 4.50 helped him to a 3-3 record this year. He struck out 37 and walked 10 in 52 innings.
Wednesday 5/11/1989: Pittsburgh's Rice severely injured
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's Jim Rice suffered a serious injury Wednesday in a game against Los Angeles (N). Rice fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Groin Muscle. This year Rice drove in 26 and scored 22 runs while batting .241 with 8 taters. He's 3rd in the National League in RBIs and 4th in homeruns!
