Monday 5/23/1989: Stewart (TOR) and Horner (ATL) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Dave Stewart, one of Toronto's best starting pitchers. Stewart was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 10 in 16 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Atlanta's Bob Horner this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Bob went 7 for 19 (.368), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 9 RBI. This year Horner drove in 33 and scored 22 runs while batting .237 with 12 bombs. He's 4th in the National League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
Wednesday 5/18/1989: Doug Drabek dominates St. Louis, gives up just 2 hits
ST. LOUIS - Houston's right-hander Doug Drabek will never forget this day. The 26-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against St. Louis on Wednesday. Drabek (4-3) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking 1, throwing 106 pitches. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' The hitting star for Houston was rightfielder Shane Mack, he finished 1 for 4, hitting a homerun, and collecting 2 RBI. Houston scored 4 runs on 12 hits.
