HOUSTON - It was an unbelievable day for Atlanta's right-hander John Smoltz. The 22-year old pitched a no-hitter against Houston on Wednesday, showing that he may have a great career in front of him. Lloyd Moseby spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 7th inning. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Smoltz (12-1) fanned 6 and walked 3, throwing 110 pitches. Mark Brouhard provided Atlanta with the offense Smoltz needed as he went 2 for 4. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Tuesday 6/7/1989: Tony Ghelfi out for 4-5 weeks
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s ace Tony Ghelfi suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least 4-5 weeks. In the 6th of the game against Oakland he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 13 starts this year Tony struck out 84 batters in 82 innings of work. His ERA is 2.96, his record 2-5.
Monday 6/6/1989: Rick Aguilera (CHN) will miss 4-5 weeks
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N) is without its right-hander Rick Aguilera for at least 4-5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Mike Bordick in a game against Los Angeles (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle which will require surgery. Opposing players hit .267 against Rick this season. While posting an ERA of 3.93 he went 5-6 in 12 starts, fanning 48 and walking 17 hitters.
Monday 6/6/1989: Boston's Venable out for 8 weeks
BOSTON - Boston's centerfielder Max Venable hurt himself in the 4th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Max Venable will miss at least 8 weeks. Torn Rib Cage Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Max has gone 50 for 218 (.229) this season, hitting one bomb and driving in 15 runs. He has scored 17 runs on his own.
Monday 6/6/1989: Dennis Eckersley pitches 2-hit shutout against Minnesota
SEATTLE - Seattle's right-hander Dennis Eckersley is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Minnesota on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 29th time he has done it in his career. With one out in the 6th inning Wallace Johnson singled to break up the no-hitter. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Eckersley (6-2) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 122 pitches. Mickey Tettleton helped Eckersley at the plate, he finished 3 for 4, hitting a homerun, scoring two runs. Seattle improved its record to 30-30, scoring 5 runs on 10 hits.
Monday 6/6/1989: Castilla and Dravecky win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Vinny Castilla, California's starting second baseman. He had an on base percentage of .519 and hit .458, while driving in 9 runs. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to New York (N)'s pitcher Dave Dravecky. Dave went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50, while fanning 12 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. In 12 starts this year Dave struck out 66 batters in 99 innings of work. His ERA is 1.36, his record 10-1. Dave has pitched 3 shutouts and 7 complete games. Ken Phelps spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with 1 away in the 7th inning. Bystrom (1-7) struck out 6 and walked 4, throwing 72 of 131 pitches for strikes. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped. What a day!' The hitting star for Houston was second baseman Craig Biggio, he collected 1 hit in 4 trips to the plate. Houston improved its record to 14-42, scoring 1 run on 5 hits.
