Well Braves fans as you are aware, John Smoltz pitched a No No tonight, and while that had the crowd going it was minor to what also happened.
While many were watching Smoltz's dominance all eyes were on Julio Cruz when he got to first base, to see if he could tie Rod Carew in career steals.
Julio managed to reach 1st 2x in the game, and he didn't waste any time as the first time he got to 1st, he tied the record, but he wasn't done as he got to first again later in the game, and broke the record and now has 1085. Each base he steals from here on out will be a record breaker, and he said he hopes to break the record at least 300 more times.
While Julio may never steal 100 bases in a season again like he did when he was younger, four different seasons, he has never had fewer than 50 in a season, and he claims he will be playing for at least 4 more seasons.
Currently Julio is on pace to get more than 60 again this season, and looks like he is a lock to have better than 1100 stolen bases by season end.
The front office is still tickled pink that they were able to get the fleet footed amazing batter from the Tigers as they were starting to rebuild. With 2 rings with the Tigers and one with the Braves, he is hoping to get at least one more with the Braves as he sometimes dines at a restaurant in the off season that sometimes has a former Pittsburgh Quarterback also dining, and he's tired of him doing a four finger wave....
Only the second player to break 1000 Steals, Julio says he was inspired by how great Carew was and while he is humbled to pass one of the guys he was in awe of. At the rate he is going one wonders if anyone will ever challenge the record again.
Asked if there was anything he was trying to do this season after the game, Julio smiled and turned up the radio while the # 61 rock song of 89 was playing
