Thursday 6/23/1989: Bill Madlock has 3000th career hits
MINNESOTA - Bill Madlock got a standing ovation from 33253 fans in Minnesota, who witnessed his 3000th career hit. In 16 years of big league action so far, Bill has compiled a batting average of .309, along with 317 homeruns and 1506 RBI. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.' His hit in the 1st inning was a single off Jeff Russell. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Tuesday 6/21/1989: Minnesota's Fontenot severely injured
MINNESOTA - Minnesota is without its left-hander Ray Fontenot for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Joe Charboneau in a game against Milwaukee. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. Opposing players hit .282 against Ray this season. While posting an ERA of 5.56 he went 2-6 in 15 starts, fanning 19 and walking 21 hitters.
Monday 6/20/1989: Tracy (KCR) and Denny (SFG) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Jim Tracy, Kansas City's starting rightfielder. Jim pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .563 with 2 HR and 6 RBI while slugging 1.063. The National League Player of the Week award goes to John Denny, one of San Francisco's best starting pitchers. John went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.56, while fanning 12 in 16 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 1.17 helped him to a 14-0 record this year. He struck out 99 and walked 37 in 115.2 innings. John has pitched 2 shutouts and 2 complete games. He's 3rd in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins!
Thursday 6/16/1989: Dennis Lewallyn dominates San Diego, gives up just 2 hits
SAN DIEGO - Pittsburgh's right-hander Dennis Lewallyn is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. San Diego found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Lewallyn 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 16th shutouts in his career. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Lewallyn (8-4) fanned 5 and walked 5, throwing 115 pitches. The hitting star for Pittsburgh was centerfielder Kirby Puckett, he stroked 4 hits in 5 AB, homering once, stroking a double, and collecting 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 8-0.
