Friday 7/1/1989: Gullickson (NYA) and Lewallyn (PIT) win monthly pitcher award
The best month of June in the American League certainly had New York (A)'s right-hander Bill Gullickson, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He had an ERA of just 0.41 in 44 innings of work in which he struck out 34 hitters. His record in June is 4-0. Bill fired two shutouts! This season Gullickson compiled an ERA of 2.25, going 10-3 in 16 starts. He fanned 108 while giving up 103 hits in 124 innings. Bill has pitched 3 shutouts and 6 complete games. He's 9th in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Pittsburgh's Dennis Lewallyn had a terrific June, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to New York (A)'s Willie Randolph this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Willie went 32 for 91 (.352), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 23 RBI. This year Randolph drove in 39 and scored 56 runs while batting .298 with 7 homeruns. The National League's best player of the month was New York (N)'s Floyd Rayford, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .351 and hit .341, while driving in 29 runs. Rayford has hit 13 longballs this year while batting .248. He adds 12 doubles, along with 29 runs scored. OAKLAND - Oakland is without its right-hander Dickie Noles for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Cal Ripken in a game against Cleveland. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Noles was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. BALTIMORE - Baltimore's season took a blow when Wally Joyner suffered a serious injury in the game against Seattle. He hurt his arm throwing a strike to first base. Joyner will probaby miss 5 weeks. Joyner was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Tricep Muscle. He has hit 6 taters while batting .329 this season. His 104 hits and 20 walks add up to a .375 on-base percentage. He's 8th in the American League in batting!
Tuesday 6/28/1989: Mark Grace clubs five hits in a game
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's first baseman Mark Grace once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Cleveland's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Tuesday. Number 1 in the 2nd inning, a shot estimated at 389 feet, cleared the wall in right field. Number 3 in the 4th inning accounted for a two-run double. In the 7th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Oil Can Boyd. A double off Terry Mulholland in the 8th inning accounted for his 5th hit. He had a single in the 3rd. Mark scored 3 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He now has a total of 80 hits this season, accounting for a .287 batting average. The final score of the game was 16-5.
Tuesday 6/28/1989: Boston's Teufel severely injured
BOSTON - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Boston's shortstop Tim Teufel will miss about 7 weeks after being hit by David Clyde in the 2nd inning of the game between Boston and New York (A). After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Cheekbone. Teufel has hit one tater this year while batting .211. He adds 9 doubles, along with 23 runs scored.
Monday 6/27/1989: Mike Stanley on fire, hits for cycle
ST. LOUIS - Mike Stanley hits 'em where they ain't. St. Louis certainly agrees as Los Angeles (N)'s catcher unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. In the 1st inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Bob Tewksbury. A single in the 3rd off Bob Tewksbury accounted for his 2nd hit. Hit number 3 followed in the 6th inning, a triple. His 4th cleared the based, a three-run double off Bob Tewksbury in the 7th inning. It tied the ballgame at 6. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Mike did drive in 4 while scoring 2 runs on his own. His 4 hit performance increases his batting average to .250. 72 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Mike. Floyd Rayford was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 7/23/1988.
