The American League Player of the Week award goes to Steve McCatty, one of California's best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.06 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Kirby Puckett from Pittsburgh wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Kirby went 10 for 23 (.435), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 8 RBI.
Tuesday 7/5/1989: Dwayne Murphy (TEX) will miss 9 weeks
TEXAS - Texas' rightfielder Dwayne Murphy will miss about 9 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 5th inning of the game between Texas and Kansas City. He dove for a drive off the bat of Jerry Remy, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. Texas wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Murphy had suffered a Broken Hand. He has hit 9 bombs while batting .235 this season. His 72 hits and 47 walks add up to a .338 on-base percentage.

CLEVELAND - Steve McCatty took the mound and never left. And Cleveland hitters couldn't touch him at all. California's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 16 career shutouts in 313 games started. McCatty (8-9) struck out 7 and issued 1 BB, throwing 67 of 101 pitches for strikes. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' The hitting star for California was second baseman Vinny Castilla, he finished 2 for 4, stroking a double, with 2 RBI. California scored 3 runs on 4 hits.
