PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's left-hander Ross Baumgarten suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against New York (N) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Bicep Tendon which will require surgery. Opposing players hit .184 against Ross this season. While posting an ERA of 2.18 he went 8-4 in 19 starts, fanning 87 and walking 18 hitters.

The American League Player of the Week award goes to Keith Moreland, Kansas City's starting catcher. He had an on base percentage of .471 and hit .471, while driving in 4 runs. The National League's best player of the week was Pittsburgh's Kirby Puckett, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. He hit .483 with 14 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 29 at bats. Puckett has hit for a .315 average this season. He has 50 extra base hits along with 204 total bases, resulting in a .585 slugging percentage. He's 3rd in the National League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 1st in RBI!

CALIFORNIA - California's right-hander Jeff Peterek suffered a severe injury on Thursday and will be out for at least 6-7 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against Toronto he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Elbow Ligament which will require surgery. Opposing players hit .244 against Jeff this season. While posting an ERA of 4.22 he went 2-7 in 11 starts, fanning 55 and walking 30 hitters. He has 2 complete games and one shutout.
Wednesday 7/13/1989: Seattle's Eckersley severely injured
SEATTLE - Seattle's right-hander Dennis Eckersley will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Milwaukee on Wednesday. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. In 18 starts this year Dennis struck out 136 batters in 147 innings of work. His ERA is 2.02, his record 9-3. He has 5 complete games and 2 shutouts.
