Monday 7/25/1989: Huge blow for Cleveland's Jackson, career over
CLEVELAND - It was one of baseball saddest days. Cleveland's left-hander Danny Jackson fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Chicago (A) on Monday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Danny Tartabull, then suddenly collapsed. Cleveland wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Jackson had suffered a Torn Bicep Muscle. This season Jackson compiled an ERA of 4.84, going 7-4 in 7 starts. He fanned 58 while giving up 87 hits in 70.2 innings. His career featured a record of 41-29 with an ERA of 3.99. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
Monday 7/25/1989: New York (A)'s Gullickson wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Bill Gullickson, one of New York (A)'s best starting pitchers. Bill went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 14 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Gullickson compiled an ERA of 2.16, going 13-3 in 20 starts. He fanned 130 while giving up 131 hits in 154.1 innings. He has 7 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 8th in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Chili Davis, San Diego's starting leftfielder. Chili pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .476 with 1 HR and 3 RBI while slugging .905.
Saturday 7/23/1989: Steve Shirley (DET) will miss 4-5 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit's pitcher Steve Shirley was part of a scary incident that saw the left-hander being hit by a line drive in the 3rd inning of the game between Detroit and Milwaukee. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Shirley will miss about 4-5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Hand which will require surgery. His ERA of 5.12 helped him to a 7-7 record this year. He struck out 88 and walked 84 in 121.1 innings.
Thursday 7/21/1989: Los Angeles (N)'s Pete Coachman gets the cycle
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s third baseman Pete Coachman accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Chicago (N), hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .240! His 1st hit, off Don Heinkel in the 1st inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. That one tied it at 1 runs apiece. A single in the 2nd off Don Heinkel accounted for his 2nd hit. His 3rd hit was a RBI double off Mike Perez in the 4th inning. A triple off Mike Schooler in the 6th inning, accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Pete scored 2 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .333. He's now the 73rd player in league history to hit for the cycle! Mike Stanley was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 6/27/1989.
