Monday 8/15/1989: Mike Jeffcoat out for full season
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's ace Mike Jeffcoat experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 5th inning of the game against San Diego, Jeffcoat complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Pittsburgh wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Jeffcoat had suffered a Ruptured Disc Back. Opposing players hit .212 against Mike this season. While posting an ERA of 3.05 he went 5-12 in 25 starts, fanning 126 and walking 35 hitters.
Monday 8/15/1989: McGregor (CHA) and Maddux (ATL) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Scott McGregor, one of Chicago (A)'s best starting pitchers. McGregor was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 11 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Atlanta's pitcher Greg Maddux. Greg went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.60, while fanning 11 in 15 innings of work. This season Maddux compiled an ERA of 1.89, going 16-6 in 26 starts. He fanned 153 while giving up 125 hits in 185.2 innings. Greg has pitched one shutout and 4 complete games. He's 5th in the National League in ERA and 5th in wins!
Thursday 8/11/1989: Willie Randolph out for 8 weeks
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s season took a blow when Willie Randolph suffered a serious injury in the game against Milwaukee. He hurt his arm throwing a strike to first base. Randolph will probaby miss 8 weeks. Strained Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Willie has gone 131 for 433 (.303) this season, hitting 8 homeruns and driving in 53 runs. He has scored 77 runs on his own.
Monday 8/8/1989: Erik Hanson out for full season
HOUSTON - Houston's right-hander Erik Hanson experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 8th inning of the game against New York (N), Hanson complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Tricep Muscle. His ERA of 6.89 helped him to a 2-9 record this year. He struck out 37 and walked 39 in 65.1 innings.
Monday 8/8/1989: Scott McGregor dominates Minnesota, gives up just 2 hits
MINNESOTA - Chicago (A)'s lefty Scott McGregor is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Minnesota on just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 31st time he has done it in his career. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' McGregor (12-6) struck out 6 and walked none, throwing 60 of 94 pitches for strikes. Chicago (A)'s first baseman Keith Hernandez stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of McGregor. Chicago (A) scored 2 runs on 6 hits.
