Thursday 9/1/1989: Eichelberger and Maddux receive Pitcher of the Month award
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Baltimore's Juan Eichelberger. He went 7-0 in August and finished the month with an ERA of 1.23. He struck out 26 in 51.1 innings. Juan pitched a shutout as well. This season Eichelberger compiled an ERA of 2.60, going 15-7 in 28 starts. He fanned 122 while giving up 127 hits in 197 innings. Juan has pitched 2 shutouts and 3 complete games. He's 3rd in the American League in wins! Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is Atlanta's Greg Maddux. Clint pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .419 with 6 and 27 RBI while slugging .686. Hurdle has walked 34 times this year and posts a .379 OBP. While batting .338, 169 for 500, he has driven in 75 runs. He's 2nd in the American League in batting! It's the 4th time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s first baseman Willie Aikens. In 97 at bats he hit .309 with 8 HR and 26 RBI. Willie is hitting .271 this year, with 116 hits in 428 at bats. He has driven in 66 runs, slugging .498.
Tuesday 8/30/1989: Mitch Webster out for full season
DETROIT - Detroit's centerfielder Mitch Webster will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Detroit and New York (A). The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Webster collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Torn Thigh Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This year Webster drove in 73 and scored 85 runs while batting .277 with 29 taters.
Monday 8/29/1989: Atlanta's Murphy wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Clint Hurdle, Oakland's starting first baseman. Clint was on fire, hitting .519 with 2 HR and 9 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .383, Clint hit .341 and slugged .518. He has collected 74 runs batted in this year. He's 2nd in the American League in batting! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Dale Murphy, Atlanta's starting centerfielder. He hit .370 with 8 RBI and slugged .741 in 27 at bats. Saturday 8/27/1989: Scott Sanderson blanks Chicago (N) with a 1-hitter
CHICAGO (N) - New York (N)'s right-hander Scott Sanderson is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Chicago (N) found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Sanderson 5th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 21st shutouts in his career. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Sanderson (12-6) struck out 7 and walked 2, throwing 81 of 128 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for New York (N) was first baseman Ken Phelps, he collected 1 hit in 4 trips to the plate, stroking a double, with 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Wednesday 8/24/1989: Houston's Saberhagen out for 9 weeks
HOUSTON - When it rains, it pours. Houston's right-hander Bret Saberhagen will not pitch for at least 9 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Atlanta where he left the field in the 6th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Tricep Muscle. Opposing players hit .253 against Bret this season. While posting an ERA of 3.78 he went 8-12 in 20 starts, fanning 78 and walking 24 hitters. Bret has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games.
