Tuesday 9/6/1989: Pittsburgh's McGriff out for full season
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's first baseman Fred McGriff will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Pittsburgh and St. Louis. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly McGriff collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. McGriff was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Groin Muscle. His season features a batting average of .238 (108 hits in 454 AB), 32 doubles, 3 triples and 11 taters. McGriff collected 55 RBI and 66 runs as well.
Monday 9/5/1989: Detroit's Incaviglia wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Pete Incaviglia, Detroit's starting leftfielder. In 27 at bats he hit .519 with 3 HR and 7 RBI. Philadelphia's pitcher Jack Morris had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Morris was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 11 in 15.2 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Morris compiled an ERA of 3.06, going 9-13 in 28 starts. He fanned 140 while giving up 148 hits in 191 innings. Jack has pitched one shutout and 3 complete games.
