Monday 9/12/1989: Oakland's McGwire severely injured
OAKLAND - Toronto's Jeff Russell drilled Oakland's first baseman Mark McGwire in the 1st inning. He was slow getting up and had to leave the game. Mark McGwire will miss at least 8-9 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Fractured Socket Eye. Surgery will be performed next week. McGwire has walked 55 times this year and posts a .371 OBP. While batting .294, 144 for 489, he has driven in 74 runs.
Monday 9/12/1989: Chicago (A)'s Hernandez wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Keith Hernandez, Chicago (A)'s starting first baseman. Keith went 9 for 20 (.450), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 8 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 11 game hitting streak right now. San Francisco's third baseman Andres Galarraga had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Galarraga helped his team with an average of .455 and 10 RBI in 22 at bats. He now has homered in 5 consecutive games as well!
