Today Warren announced that an end to his era in baseball is coming to a close. The right hander is thankful he will see the end of his career with his beloved Braves, lest someone decides to pay him just to show up next season.
The 37 year old Warren was once slated to be the Braves perennial closer back in 77, but then along came a youngster named Doug that took the job away and he was then traded to the Orioles, where initially it looked like he would become their closer, except he faltered in the AL.
At the end og the 80 season he came back to the Braves and became one of Doug's closest friends and he also became the de facto setup guy for Doug on his reign of being the best closer of the game in the 80's.
Doug has said without Warren, he probably would have at least 100 fewer saves, as Warren would come on and shut down the game in the 7th and 8th giving Doug a chance to close it out.
So far in Warrens career he is 71-52 with 66 saves, a two time WS ring wearer and what is almost impossible to do, an allstar selection as a pure middle reliever!
Atlanta is indebted to such a humble, yet amazing player that delivered year after year. This being his 15th year in the majors, with 12+ being with the Braves... his decline has already been felt, as coach said, it's just not the same having a shutdown guy holding the game till Mr Shutdown comes in...
Here's to you Warren!
